³⁰ Deeply moved^(A) at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept^(B) there.

³¹ After he had washed his face, he came out and, controlling himself,^(C) said, “Serve the food.”^(D)

³² They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews,^(E) for that is detestable to Egyptians.^{(F) 33} The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn^(G) to the youngest;^(H) and they looked at each other in astonishment. ³⁴ When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s.^(I) So they feasted^(J) and drank freely with him.

Joseph Makes Himself Known

45 Then Joseph could no longer control himself^(A) before all his attendants, and he cried out, “Have everyone leave my presence!”^(B) So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. ² And he wept^(C) so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household heard about it.^(D)

³ Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?”^(E) But his brothers were not able to answer him,^(F) because they were terrified at his presence.^(G)

⁴ Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.”^(H) When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt!^{(I) 5} And now, do not be distressed^(J) and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here,^(K) because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.^(L)

¹⁹ But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?^{(A) 20} You intended to harm me,^(B) but God intended^(C) it for good^(D) to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.^{(E) 21} So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.^(F)” And he reassured them and spoke kindly^(G) to them.

The Death of Joseph

²² Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years^{(H) 23} and saw the third generation^(I) of Ephraim’s^(J) children.^(K) Also the children of Makir^(L) son of Manasseh^(M) were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.^[a](N)

²⁴ Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die.^(O) But God will surely come to your aid^(P) and take you up out of this land to the land^(Q) he promised on oath to Abraham,^(R) Isaac^(S) and Jacob.”^{(T) 25} And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath^(U) and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones^(V) up from this place.”^(W)
