³⁸ The younger also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi.^[a] He is the father of the Ammonites of today.^(A)

¹⁹ When you get close to the Ammonites, don’t show any hostility to them or provoke them, for I will not give you any of the Ammonites’ land as a possession; I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.’”^(A)

³ No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the Lord’s assembly;^(A) none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, may ever enter the Lord’s assembly.

Israel’s Rebellion and Repentance

⁶ Then the Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.^(A) They worshiped the Baals and the Ashtoreths, the gods of Aram, Sidon, and Moab, and the gods of the Ammonites and the Philistines.^(B) They abandoned the Lord and did not worship him.^{(C) 7} So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them to the Philistines and the Ammonites.^(D)

¹¹ The next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions.^(A) During the morning watch, they invaded the Ammonite camp and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. There were survivors, but they were so scattered that no two of them were left together.

¹² But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was coming against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king reign over us’—even though the Lord your God is your king.

⁵ Solomon followed Ashtoreth,^(A) the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom,^(B) the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites.^{(C) 6} Solomon did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, and unlike his father David, he did not remain loyal to the Lord.

⁷ At that time, Solomon built a high place^(D) for Chemosh,^(E) the abhorrent idol of Moab, and for Milcom,^[a](F) the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites, on the hill across from Jerusalem.^(G)

³³ For they have abandoned me; they have bowed down to Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, to Chemosh, the god of Moab, and to Milcom, the god of the Ammonites.^(A) They have not walked in my ways to do what is right in my sight and to carry out my statutes and my judgments as his father David did.^(B)

² The Lord sent Chaldean, Aramean,^(A) Moabite,^(B) and Ammonite raiders against Jehoiakim. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord he had spoken through his servants the prophets.^(C)

¹⁰ When Sanballat the Horonite^(A) and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard that someone had come to pursue the prosperity of the Israelites, they were greatly displeased.^(B)
