¹⁷ but Jacob went to Succoth. He built a house for himself and shelters for his livestock; that is why the place was called Succoth.^[a](A)

The Festival of Shelters

¹³ “You are to celebrate the Festival of Shelters^(A) for seven days when you have gathered in everything from your threshing floor and winepress.^(B)

¹⁶ “All your males are to appear three times a year^(A) before the Lord your God in the place he chooses: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Weeks, and the Festival of Shelters. No one is to appear before the Lord empty-handed.^(B)

¹⁰ Moses commanded them, “At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of debt cancellation,^(A) during the Festival of Shelters,^(B)

¹⁴ They found written in the law how the Lord had commanded through Moses that the Israelites should dwell in shelters during the festival of the seventh month.^{(A) 15} So they proclaimed and spread this news throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the hill country and bring back branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make shelters, just as it is written.”^{(B) 16} The people went out, brought back branches, and made shelters for themselves on each of their rooftops^(C) and courtyards, the court of the house of God, the square by the Water Gate,^(D) and the square by the Ephraim Gate.^{(E) 17} The whole community that had returned from exile^(F) made shelters and lived in them. The Israelites had not celebrated like this from the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day.^(G) And there was tremendous joy.^(H)

Announcement of Restoration

⁵ Jonah left the city and found a place east of it.^(A) He made himself a shelter there and sat in its shade to see what would happen to the city.
