God Has Spoken To Us Through Not a Prophet, But a Son

God, having spoken long-ago in-many-portions and in-many-ways to the fathers by the prophets, spoke to us at the last[a] of these days by a Son[b], Whom He appointed inheritor of all things, through Whom also He made the worlds[c],

The Son Sat Down At God’s Right Hand, Having Become Better Than Angels

...Who— being the radiance[d] of His glory and exact-representation[e] of His essence[f], and upholding all things by the word of [g] His power— having made purification of sins, sat-down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so-much better than the angels by-as-much-as He has inherited a more-excellent name than they.

For God Commands The Angels To Worship His Son

For to which of the angels did He ever say “You are my Son. Today I have fathered you”? [Ps 2:7]; and again, “I will be a father to Him, and He will be a son to Me”? [1 Chron 17:13]. And again[h], when He brings the Firstborn into the world He says [in Deut 32:43] “And let all the angels of God give-worship to Him”.

And God Says His Son Will Rule Forever Over What He Created

And with regard to the angels He says [in Ps 104:4] “The One making His angels winds and His ministers a flame of [i] fire”. But with regard to the Son He says:

“Your throne, God[j], is forever and ever. And the scepter of [k] straightness[l] is the scepter of Your kingdom. You loved righteousness and hated lawlessness. For this reason God, your God, anointed You with the oil of gladness beyond Your companions” [Ps 45:6-7].

10 And, “You[m], Lord, laid-the-foundation-of the earth at the beginnings, and the heavens are works of Your hands. 11 They will perish, but You continue[n]. Indeed they will all become-old like a garment, 12 and You will roll them up as-if a cloak. They will indeed be changed like a garment. But You are the same, and Your years will not end” [Ps 102:25-27].

And God Will Make His Son’s Enemies His Footstool

13 And with regard to which of the angels has He ever said “Be sitting on My right side until I put Your enemies as a footstool of Your feet”? [Ps 110:1]. 14 Are they not all ministering spirits being sent-forth for service for the sake of the ones going to inherit salvation?

Therefore We Must Pay More Attention To What God Said Through His Son

For this reason[o], we must pay more attention to the things having been heard, that we may not-ever drift-away. For if the word having been spoken through angels proved-to-be firm, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, how shall we escape, having neglected[p] so great a salvation?— which, having begun to be spoken by the Lord, was confirmed to[q] us by the ones having heard, God testifying-with both signs and wonders and various miracles and distributions of the Holy Spirit according to His will.

For The Coming World Is Subject To Jesus, Who Tasted Death For All And Was Crowned

For He[r] did not subject to angels the coming world concerning which we are speaking. But one solemnly-testified somewhere saying, “What is man that You remember[s] him, or the son[t] of man that You look-after him? You made him lower[u] than angels for a little[v] while. You crowned him with glory and honor. You subjected all things under his feet” [Ps 8:4-6]. For[w] in the subjecting all things to him, He left nothing not-subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things having been subjected to him. But[x] we see the One having been made lower than angels for a little while— Jesus— having been crowned with glory and honor because-of the suffering of the death, so-that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.

For It Was Fitting For God To Perfect The Author of Salvation Through Sufferings

10 For it was fitting[y] for Him[z] for-the-sake-of Whom are all things and through Whom are all things, that in bringing many sons to glory He should perfect[aa] the Author[ab] of their salvation through sufferings. 11 For both the One making-holy and the ones being made holy are all from one Father[ac], for which reason He is not ashamed to be calling them brothers, 12 saying “I will declare Your name to My brothers. I will sing-praise to You in the midst of the congregation” [Ps 22:22]; 13 and again [in Isa 8:17], “I will be trusting[ad] in Him”; and again [in Isa 8:18], “Behold— I and the children whom God gave to Me”.

So The Son Took On Mortal Flesh And Died To Release Us From The Power of Death

14 Therefore, since the children have shared of blood and flesh, He Himself also similarly partook of the same things in order that through death He might do-away-with[ae] the one having the power of death (that is, the devil), 15 and release these: all-who by the fear of death were subject-to[af] slavery through all their living. 16 For He surely does not take-hold-of [ag] angels, but He takes hold of the seed of Abraham.

He Had To Become Like Us In All Things In Order To Become a Merciful High Priest

17 Hence, He had-to become-like His brothers in all things in order that He might become a merciful and faithful High Priest in the things pertaining to God, so as to make-an-offering-for-satisfaction[ah] [of God’s wrath] as to the sins of the people. 18 For having Himself [ai] been tempted[aj] in what He has suffered, He is able to help the ones being tempted.

Footnotes

  1. Hebrews 1:2 Or, end.
  2. Hebrews 1:2 That is, one whose essential quality is that He is God’s Son (as in 3:6; 5:8; 7:28), not just a prophet.
  3. Hebrews 1:2 Or, ages. That is, the universe of time and space.
  4. Hebrews 1:3 Or, reflection.
  5. Hebrews 1:3 As the imprint matches the die, so Christ matches the very ‘essence’ of God.
  6. Hebrews 1:3 Or, substance, actual being, reality.
  7. Hebrews 1:3 That is, characterized by; His powerful word.
  8. Hebrews 1:6 Or, And when He again brings.
  9. Hebrews 1:7 That is, characterized by; a fiery flame.
  10. Hebrews 1:8 The Son is addressed as God here; as Lord in v 10. The angels, who serve, are compared to the Son, who rules forever.
  11. Hebrews 1:8 That is, characterized by.
  12. Hebrews 1:8 That is, moral straightness; uprightness.
  13. Hebrews 1:10 That is, the Son. The created angels are compared to the Son who created the universe and will bring it to an end.
  14. Hebrews 1:11 Or, remain continually.
  15. Hebrews 2:1 That is, because God spoke (1:2) and because of who the Son is (1:3-14).
  16. Hebrews 2:3 Or, paid no concern to, been careless of.
  17. Hebrews 2:3 Or, for.
  18. Hebrews 2:5 That is, God. The writer continues his description of the Son. Rulership was not given to angels.
  19. Hebrews 2:6 That is, keep him in mind for his benefit.
  20. Hebrews 2:6 The OT verse is an example of Hebrew parallelism, so this may mean the same as ‘man’ earlier; humanity or the offspring of humanity. The writer then applies this OT quote to Christ in v 9. Or, Son of Man, referring to Jesus; the writer applies this quote to Christ beginning right here. In this case, ‘his’ and ‘him’ in v 7-8 refer to Jesus.
  21. Hebrews 2:7 That is, in physical status, being mortal.
  22. Hebrews 2:7 Or, a little bit lower than angels.
  23. Hebrews 2:8 The writer draws his point from the psalm. God did not subject the coming world to angels, for He left nothing not subject to man (or, to Jesus).
  24. Hebrews 2:9 The writer contrasts the present lack of fulfillment in man (or in Jesus, referring to His presently unsubdued enemies) to the present fulfillment in Jesus.
  25. Hebrews 2:10 Or, suitable, proper.
  26. Hebrews 2:10 That is, God.
  27. Hebrews 2:10 Or, complete, finish.
  28. Hebrews 2:10 Or, Beginner, Originator, Founder.
  29. Hebrews 2:11 Or, ancestor (Adam or Abraham); or, nature (blood and flesh, v 14).
  30. Hebrews 2:13 The Messiah shares our trust in the Father.
  31. Hebrews 2:14 Or, render-powerless.
  32. Hebrews 2:15 Or, held-in.
  33. Hebrews 2:16 That is, to help.
  34. Hebrews 2:17 Or, make-propitiation. That is, make a sacrificial offering to satisfy God’s wrath against sin and gain His mercy. Jesus offered Himself, 7:27; 9:26. Compare Rom 3:25.
  35. Hebrews 2:18 Or, For having been tempted in what He Himself has suffered.
  36. Hebrews 2:18 Or, tested.

God’s Final Word: His Son

In the past God spoke(A) to our ancestors through the prophets(B) at many times and in various ways,(C) but in these last days(D) he has spoken to us by his Son,(E) whom he appointed heir(F) of all things, and through whom(G) also he made the universe.(H) The Son is the radiance of God’s glory(I) and the exact representation of his being,(J) sustaining all things(K) by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins,(L) he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.(M) So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.(N)

The Son Superior to Angels

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father”[a]?(O)

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son”[b]?(P)

And again, when God brings his firstborn(Q) into the world,(R) he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”[c](S)

In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,
    and his servants flames of fire.”[d](T)

But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;(U)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions(V)
    by anointing you with the oil(W) of joy.”[e](X)

10 He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.(Y)
11 They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.(Z)
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,(AA)
    and your years will never end.”[f](AB)

13 To which of the angels did God ever say,

“Sit at my right hand(AC)
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool(AD) for your feet”[g]?(AE)

14 Are not all angels ministering spirits(AF) sent to serve those who will inherit(AG) salvation?(AH)

Warning to Pay Attention

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.(AI) For since the message spoken(AJ) through angels(AK) was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,(AL) how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?(AM) This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord,(AN) was confirmed to us by those who heard him.(AO) God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles,(AP) and by gifts of the Holy Spirit(AQ) distributed according to his will.(AR)

Jesus Made Fully Human

It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone(AS) has testified:

“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
    a son of man that you care for him?(AT)
You made them a little[h] lower than the angels;
    you crowned them with glory and honor
    and put everything under their feet.”[i][j](AU)

In putting everything under them,[k] God left nothing that is not subject to them.[l] Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.[m] But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor(AV) because he suffered death,(AW) so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.(AX)

10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,(AY) should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.(AZ) 11 Both the one who makes people holy(BA) and those who are made holy(BB) are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.[n](BC) 12 He says,

“I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;
    in the assembly I will sing your praises.”[o](BD)

13 And again,

“I will put my trust in him.”[p](BE)

And again he says,

“Here am I, and the children God has given me.”[q](BF)

14 Since the children have flesh and blood,(BG) he too shared in their humanity(BH) so that by his death he might break the power(BI) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil(BJ) 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear(BK) of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.(BL) 17 For this reason he had to be made like them,[r](BM) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful(BN) and faithful high priest(BO) in service to God,(BP) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.(BQ) 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.(BR)
