For the Lord disciplines the one whom he loves,
    and punishes every son whom he accepts.”[a]

Endure it for discipline. God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there whom a father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, in which all legitimate sons[b] have become participants, then you are illegitimate and not sons.

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(C) For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline(D)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
