Our Compassionate High Priest

14 Seeing then that we have a great (A)High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, (B)let us hold fast our confession. 15 For (C)we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but (D)was in all points tempted as we are, (E)yet without sin. 16 (F)Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Qualifications for High Priesthood

For every high priest taken from among men (G)is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can [a]have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to (H)weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for (I)himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as (J)Aaron was.

A Priest Forever

(K)So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:

(L)“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.”

As He also says in another place:

(M)“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek”;

who, in the days of His flesh, when He had (N)offered up prayers and supplications, (O)with vehement cries and tears to Him (P)who was able to save Him from death, and was heard (Q)because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned (R)obedience by the things which He suffered. And (S)having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest (T)“according to the order of Melchizedek,” 11 of whom (U)we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become (V)dull of hearing.

Spiritual Immaturity

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the [b]oracles of God; and you have come to need (W)milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is (X)a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are [c]of full age, that is, those who by reason of [d]use have their senses exercised (Y)to discern both good and evil.

The Peril of Not Progressing

Therefore, (Z)leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to [e]perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from (AA)dead works and of faith toward God, (AB)of the doctrine of baptisms, (AC)of laying on of hands, (AD)of resurrection of the dead, (AE)and of eternal judgment. And this [f]we will do if God permits.

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted (AF)the heavenly gift, and (AG)have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, [g]if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, (AH)since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, (AI)receives blessing from God; (AJ)but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

A Better Estimate

But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. 10 For (AK)God is not unjust to forget (AL)your work and [h]labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have (AM)ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence (AN)to the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 that you do not become [i]sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience (AO)inherit the promises.

God’s Infallible Purpose in Christ

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, (AP)He swore by Himself, 14 saying, (AQ)“Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the (AR)promise. 16 For men indeed swear by the greater, and (AS)an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to (AT)the heirs of promise (AU)the [j]immutability of His counsel, [k]confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two [l]immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to (AV)lie, we [m]might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope (AW)set before us.

19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, (AX)and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 (AY)where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, (AZ)having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

The King of Righteousness(BA)

For this (BB)Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,” without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.

Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the [n]spoils. And indeed (BC)those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham; but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham (BD)and blessed (BE)him who had the promises. Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better. Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, (BF)of whom it is witnessed that he lives. Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.

Need for a New Priesthood(BG)

11 (BH)Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. 13 For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has [o]officiated at the altar.

14 For it is evident that (BI)our Lord arose from (BJ)Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning [p]priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest 16 who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. 17 For [q]He testifies:

(BK)“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”

18 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of (BL)its weakness and unprofitableness, 19 for (BM)the law made nothing [r]perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of (BN)a better hope, through which (BO)we draw near to God.

Greatness of the New Priest

20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath 21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:

(BP)“The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
‘You are a priest [s]forever
According to the order of Melchizedek’ ”),

22 by so much more Jesus has become a [t]surety of a (BQ)better covenant.

23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. 24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also (BR)able to save [u]to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives (BS)to make intercession for them.

26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, (BT)who is holy, [v]harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, (BU)and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His (BV)own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.

The New Priestly Service

Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, (BW)who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of (BX)the [w]sanctuary and of (BY)the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.

For (BZ)every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore (CA)it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; who serve (CB)the copy and (CC)shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, (CD)“See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” But now (CE)He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a (CF)better covenant, which was established on better promises.

A New Covenant(CG)

For if that (CH)first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says: (CI)“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the (CJ)Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and (CK)I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 (CL)None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the (CM)Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, (CN)and their sins [x]and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

13 (CO)In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

The Earthly Sanctuary(CP)

Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and (CQ)the earthly sanctuary. For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the [y]sanctuary; (CR)and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All, which had the (CS)golden censer and (CT)the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were (CU)the golden pot that had the manna, (CV)Aaron’s rod that budded, and (CW)the tablets of the covenant; and (CX)above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Limitations of the Earthly Service

Now when these things had been thus prepared, (CY)the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. But into the second part the high priest went alone (CZ)once a year, not without blood, which he offered for (DA)himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance; the Holy Spirit indicating this, that (DB)the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered (DC)which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience— 10 concerned only with (DD)foods and drinks, (DE)various [z]washings, (DF)and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.

The Heavenly Sanctuary

11 But Christ came as High Priest of (DG)the good things [aa]to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not (DH)with the blood of goats and calves, but (DI)with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place (DJ)once for all, (DK)having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if (DL)the blood of bulls and goats and (DM)the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, [ab]sanctifies for the [ac]purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without [ad]spot to God, (DN)cleanse your conscience from (DO)dead works (DP)to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason (DQ)He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that (DR)those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The Mediator’s Death Necessary

16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For (DS)a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. 18 (DT)Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every [ae]precept to all the people according to the law, (DU)he took the blood of calves and goats, (DV)with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, (DW)“This is the (DX)blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” 21 Then likewise (DY)he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And according to the law almost all things are [af]purified with blood, and (DZ)without shedding of blood there is no [ag]remission.

Greatness of Christ’s Sacrifice

23 Therefore it was necessary that (EA)the copies of the things in the heavens should be [ah]purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For (EB)Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are [ai]copies of (EC)the true, but into heaven itself, now (ED)to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 not that He should offer Himself often, as (EE)the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another— 26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 (EF)And as it is appointed for men to die once, (EG)but after this the judgment, 28 so (EH)Christ was (EI)offered once to bear the sins (EJ)of many. To those who (EK)eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Animal Sacrifices Insufficient

10 For the law, having a (EL)shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, (EM)can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once [aj]purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For (EN)it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

Christ’s Death Fulfills God’s Will(EO)

Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:

(EP)“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
You had no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—
In the volume of the book it is written of Me—
To do Your will, O God.’ ”

Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, [ak]O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 (EQ)By that will we have been [al]sanctified (ER)through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Christ’s Death Perfects the Sanctified

11 And every priest stands (ES)ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 (ET)But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down (EU)at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting (EV)till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being [am]sanctified.

15 But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,

16 (EW)“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, (EX)“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where there is [an]remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Jesus the Great High Priest

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest(A) who has ascended into heaven,[a](B) Jesus the Son of God,(C) let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.(D) 15 For we do not have a high priest(E) who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are(F)—yet he did not sin.(G) 16 Let us then approach(H) God’s throne of grace with confidence,(I) so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God,(J) to offer gifts and sacrifices(K) for sins.(L) He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray,(M) since he himself is subject to weakness.(N) This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.(O) And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.(P)

In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory(Q) of becoming a high priest.(R) But God said(S) to him,

“You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.”[b](T)

And he says in another place,

“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.(U)[c](V)

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions(W) with fervent cries and tears(X) to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard(Y) because of his reverent submission.(Z) Son(AA) though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered(AB) and, once made perfect,(AC) he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest(AD) in the order of Melchizedek.(AE)

Warning Against Falling Away(AF)

11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths(AG) of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!(AH) 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant,(AI) is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature,(AJ) who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.(AK)

Therefore let us move beyond(AL) the elementary teachings(AM) about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[d](AN) and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites,[e](AO) the laying on of hands,(AP) the resurrection of the dead,(AQ) and eternal judgment. And God permitting,(AR) we will do so.

It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened,(AS) who have tasted the heavenly gift,(AT) who have shared in the Holy Spirit,(AU) who have tasted the goodness(AV) of the word of God(AW) and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen[f] away, to be brought back to repentance.(AX) To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God(AY) all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed.(AZ) In the end it will be burned.

Even though we speak like this, dear friends,(BA) we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.(BB) 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope(BC) for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate(BD) those who through faith and patience(BE) inherit what has been promised.(BF)

The Certainty of God’s Promise

13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,(BG) 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”[g](BH) 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.(BI)

16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.(BJ) 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging(BK) nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised,(BL) he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,(BM) we who have fled to take hold of the hope(BN) set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,(BO) 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.(BP) He has become a high priest(BQ) forever, in the order of Melchizedek.(BR)

Melchizedek the Priest

This Melchizedek was king of Salem(BS) and priest of God Most High.(BT) He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,(BU) and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” Without father or mother, without genealogy,(BV) without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God,(BW) he remains a priest forever.

Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch(BX) Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!(BY) Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people(BZ)—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed(CA) him who had the promises.(CB) And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living.(CC) One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10 because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.

Jesus Like Melchizedek

11 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people(CD) established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come,(CE) one in the order of Melchizedek,(CF) not in the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. 13 He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe,(CG) and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar.(CH) 14 For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah,(CI) and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15 And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16 one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is declared:

“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.”[h](CJ)

18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless(CK) 19 (for the law made nothing perfect),(CL) and a better hope(CM) is introduced, by which we draw near to God.(CN)

20 And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:

“The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:(CO)
    ‘You are a priest forever.’”[i](CP)

22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.(CQ)

23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.(CR) 25 Therefore he is able to save(CS) completely[j] those who come to God(CT) through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.(CU)

26 Such a high priest(CV) truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners,(CW) exalted above the heavens.(CX) 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices(CY) day after day, first for his own sins,(CZ) and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all(DA) when he offered himself.(DB) 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness;(DC) but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son,(DD) who has been made perfect(DE) forever.

The High Priest of a New Covenant

Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest,(DF) who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,(DG) and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle(DH) set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

Every high priest(DI) is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices,(DJ) and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.(DK) If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law.(DL) They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy(DM) and shadow(DN) of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned(DO) when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[k](DP) But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant(DQ) of which he is mediator(DR) is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another.(DS) But God found fault with the people and said[l]:

“The days are coming, declares the Lord,
    when I will make a new covenant(DT)
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant
    I made with their ancestors(DU)
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
and I turned away from them,
declares the Lord.
10 This is the covenant(DV) I will establish with the people of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.(DW)
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.(DX)
11 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,(DY)
from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.(DZ)[m](EA)

13 By calling this covenant “new,”(EB) he has made the first one obsolete;(EC) and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

Worship in the Earthly Tabernacle

Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary.(ED) A tabernacle(EE) was set up. In its first room were the lampstand(EF) and the table(EG) with its consecrated bread;(EH) this was called the Holy Place.(EI) Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place,(EJ) which had the golden altar of incense(EK) and the gold-covered ark of the covenant.(EL) This ark contained the gold jar of manna,(EM) Aaron’s staff that had budded,(EN) and the stone tablets of the covenant.(EO) Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory,(EP) overshadowing the atonement cover.(EQ) But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly(ER) into the outer room to carry on their ministry. But only the high priest entered(ES) the inner room,(ET) and that only once a year,(EU) and never without blood,(EV) which he offered for himself(EW) and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.(EX) The Holy Spirit was showing(EY) by this that the way(EZ) into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. This is an illustration(FA) for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered(FB) were not able to clear the conscience(FC) of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food(FD) and drink(FE) and various ceremonial washings(FF)—external regulations(FG) applying until the time of the new order.

The Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ came as high priest(FH) of the good things that are now already here,[n](FI) he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle(FJ) that is not made with human hands,(FK) that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;(FL) but he entered the Most Holy Place(FM) once for all(FN) by his own blood,(FO) thus obtaining[o] eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls(FP) and the ashes of a heifer(FQ) sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit(FR) offered himself(FS) unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences(FT) from acts that lead to death,[p](FU) so that we may serve the living God!(FV)

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator(FW) of a new covenant,(FX) that those who are called(FY) may receive the promised(FZ) eternal inheritance(GA)—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.(GB)

16 In the case of a will,[q] it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.(GC) 19 When Moses had proclaimed(GD) every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves,(GE) together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.(GF) 20 He said, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.”[r](GG) 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood,(GH) and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.(GI)

23 It was necessary, then, for the copies(GJ) of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one;(GK) he entered heaven itself,(GL) now to appear for us in God’s presence.(GM) 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place(GN) every year with blood that is not his own.(GO) 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.(GP) But he has appeared(GQ) once for all(GR) at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.(GS) 27 Just as people are destined to die once,(GT) and after that to face judgment,(GU) 28 so Christ was sacrificed once(GV) to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time,(GW) not to bear sin,(GX) but to bring salvation(GY) to those who are waiting for him.(GZ)

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

10 The law is only a shadow(HA) of the good things(HB) that are coming—not the realities themselves.(HC) For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect(HD) those who draw near to worship.(HE) Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.(HF) But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.(HG) It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats(HH) to take away sins.(HI)

Therefore, when Christ came into the world,(HJ) he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;(HK)
with burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you were not pleased.
Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll(HL)
I have come to do your will, my God.’”[s](HM)

First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”(HN)—though they were offered in accordance with the law. Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”(HO) He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy(HP) through the sacrifice of the body(HQ) of Jesus Christ once for all.(HR)

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,(HS) which can never take away sins.(HT) 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,(HU) he sat down at the right hand of God,(HV) 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.(HW) 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect(HX) forever those who are being made holy.(HY)

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies(HZ) to us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”[t](IA)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts
    I will remember no more.”[u](IB)

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
