²¹but the Messiah attains his priesthood with an oath, through what was said to him:

The Lord has sworn and will not repent;
you are a priest forever.

²²Jesus has thus, additionally, become the guarantee of a better covenant.

²³There needed to be a large number of Levitical priests, since they stop holding office at death.

“The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:^(A)
‘You are a priest forever.’”^[a]^(B)

²²Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.^(C)

²³Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office;
