⁸Everyone in Gilead is evil;
your hands are stained
    with the blood of victims.^[a]
⁹You priests are like a gang
    of robbers in ambush.^[b]
On the road to Shechem^[c]
you murder and commit
    other horrible crimes.
¹⁰I have seen a terrible thing
    in Israel—
you are unfaithful
    and unfit to worship me.

⁸Gilead is a city of evildoers,^(A)
    stained with footprints of blood.
⁹As marauders lie in ambush for a victim,^(B)
    so do bands of priests;
they murder^(C) on the road to Shechem,
    carrying out their wicked schemes.^(D)
¹⁰I have seen a horrible^(E) thing in Israel:
    There Ephraim is given to prostitution,
    Israel is defiled.^(F)
