¹³ When Ephraim saw his sickness
and Judah his wound,
Ephraim went to Assyria^(A)
and sent a delegation to the great king.^[a](B)
But he cannot cure you or heal your wound.^(C)

⁹ For they have gone up to Assyria^(A)
like a wild donkey going off on its own.
Ephraim has paid for love.^(B)

12 Ephraim chases^[a] the wind^(A)
and pursues the east wind.^(B)
He continually multiplies lies and violence.
He makes a covenant with Assyria,^(C)
and olive oil is carried to Egypt.^(D)
