12 Therefore, (A)I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and have been established in (B)the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it (C)right, as long as I am in (D)this earthly [a]dwelling, to (E)stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that (F)the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, (G)as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my (H)departure you will be able to call these things to mind.

Eyewitnesses

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised (I)tales when we made known to you the (J)power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were (K)eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such a (L)[b]declaration as this was made to Him by the (M)Majestic Glory: “This is [c]My beloved Son with whom I am well pleased”— 18 and we ourselves heard this [d]declaration made from heaven when we were with Him on the (N)holy mountain.

19 And so we have (O)the prophetic word made more (P)sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to (Q)a lamp shining in a dark place, until the (R)day dawns and the (S)morning star arises (T)in your hearts. 20 But (U)know this first of all, that (V)no prophecy of Scripture [e]becomes a matter of [f]someone’s own interpretation, 21 for (W)no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men (X)moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

The Appearance of False Prophets

But (Y)false prophets also appeared among the people, just as there will also be (Z)false teachers (AA)among you, who will (AB)secretly introduce (AC)destructive heresies, even (AD)denying the (AE)Master who (AF)bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their (AG)indecent behavior, and because of them (AH)the way of the truth will be (AI)maligned; and in their (AJ)greed they will (AK)exploit you with (AL)false words; (AM)their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

Prophecy of Scripture

12 So I will always remind you of these things,(A) even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth(B) you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory(C) as long as I live in the tent of this body,(D) 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside,(E) as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.(F) 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure(G) you will always be able to remember these things.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,(H) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.(I) 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[a](J) 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.(K)

19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,(L) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light(M) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns(N) and the morning star(O) rises in your hearts.(P) 20 Above all, you must understand(Q) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God(R) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(S)

False Teachers and Their Destruction

But there were also false prophets(T) among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.(U) They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord(V) who bought them(W)—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct(X) and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed(Y) these teachers will exploit you(Z) with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
