Isaiah's Vision of the Lord

In the year that (A)King Uzziah died I (B)saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train[a] of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had (C)six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:

(D)“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
(E)the whole earth is full of his glory!”[b]

And (F)the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and (G)the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! (H)For I am lost; (I)for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the (J)King, the Lord of hosts!”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he (K)touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Isaiah's Commission from the Lord

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for (L)us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people:

(M)“‘Keep on hearing,[c] but do not understand;
keep on seeing,[d] but do not perceive.’
10 (N)Make the heart of this people (O)dull,[e]
    and their ears heavy,
    and blind their eyes;
(P)lest they see with their eyes,
    and hear with their ears,
and understand with their hearts,
    and turn and be healed.”
11 Then I said, (Q)“How long, O Lord?”
And he said:
“Until (R)cities lie waste
    without inhabitant,
and houses without people,
    and the land is a desolate waste,
12 and the Lord removes people far away,
    and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
13 (S)And though a tenth remain in it,
    it will be burned[f] again,
like a terebinth or an oak,
    whose stump (T)remains
    when it is felled.”
(U)The holy seed[g] is its stump.

Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz

In the days of (V)Ahaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, (W)Rezin the king of Syria and (X)Pekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it. When the house of David was told, (Y)“Syria is in league with[h] (Z)Ephraim,” the heart of Ahaz[i] and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.

And the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and (AA)Shear-jashub[j] your son, at the end of (AB)the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer's Field. And say to him, (AC)‘Be careful, (AD)be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two (AE)smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and (AF)the son of Remaliah. Because Syria, with Ephraim and (AG)the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, “Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and let us conquer it[k] for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” thus says the Lord God:

(AH)“‘It shall not stand,
    and it shall not come to pass.
For the head of Syria is (AI)Damascus,
    and the head of Damascus is Rezin.
And within sixty-five years
    Ephraim will be shattered from being a people.
And the head of Ephraim is Samaria,
    and the head of Samaria is (AJ)the son of Remaliah.
(AK)If you[l] are not firm in faith,
    you will not be firm at all.’”

The Sign of Immanuel

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz: 11 “Ask (AL)a sign of the Lord your[m] God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 And he[n] said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you (AM)weary my God also? 14 Therefore the (AN)Lord himself will give you a sign. (AO)Behold, the (AP)virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name (AQ)Immanuel.[o] 15 He shall eat (AR)curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 (AS)For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be (AT)deserted. 17 (AU)The Lord will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father's house such days as have not come since the day that (AV)Ephraim departed from Judah—the king of Assyria!”

18 In that day the Lord will (AW)whistle for the fly that is at the end of the streams of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. 19 And they will all come and settle in the steep ravines, and (AX)in the clefts of the rocks, and on all the thornbushes, and on all the pastures.[p]

20 In that day (AY)the Lord will (AZ)shave with a razor that is (BA)hired beyond (BB)the River[q]—with the king of Assyria—the head and the hair of the feet, and it will sweep away the beard also.

21 (BC)In that day a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep, 22 and because of the abundance of milk that they give, he will eat curds, for everyone who is left in the land will eat (BD)curds and honey.

23 In that day every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand shekels[r] of silver, will become (BE)briers and thorns. 24 (BF)With bow and arrows a man will come there, for all the land will be briers and thorns. 25 (BG)And as for all the hills that used to be hoed with a hoe, you will not come there for fear (BH)of briers and thorns, but they will become a place where cattle are let loose and where sheep tread.

The Coming Assyrian Invasion

Then the Lord said to me, “Take a large tablet (BI)and write on it in common characters,[s] ‘Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz.’[t] And (BJ)I will get reliable witnesses, (BK)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah, to attest for me.”

And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, (BL)“Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz; (BM)for before the boy knows how to cry ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the (BN)wealth of (BO)Damascus and the spoil of (BP)Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”

The Lord spoke to me again: “Because this people has refused the waters of (BQ)Shiloah that flow gently, and rejoice over (BR)Rezin and the son of Remaliah, therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing up against them (BS)the waters of (BT)the River,[u] mighty and many, the king of Assyria and all his glory. And it (BU)will rise over all its channels and go over all its banks, and it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass on, (BV)reaching even to the neck, and its (BW)outspread wings will fill the breadth of your land, (BX)O Immanuel.”

Be broken,[v] you peoples, and (BY)be shattered;[w]
    give ear, all you far countries;
strap on your armor and be shattered;
    strap on your armor and be shattered.
10 Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
    speak a word, (BZ)but it will not stand,
    for God (CA)is with us.[x]

Fear God, Wait for the Lord

11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and (CB)warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: 12 “Do not call (CC)conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and (CD)do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. 13 But the Lord of hosts, (CE)him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 And he will become a (CF)sanctuary and (CG)a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many (CH)shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.”

16 Bind up (CI)the testimony; (CJ)seal the teaching[y] among my disciples. 17 I will (CK)wait for the Lord, who is (CL)hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. 18 (CM)Behold, I and (CN)the children whom the Lord has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion. 19 And when they say to you, “Inquire of the (CO)mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of (CP)the dead on behalf of the living? 20 (CQ)To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no (CR)dawn. 21 They will pass through the land,[z] greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against[aa] their king and their God, and turn their faces upward. 22 (CS)And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into (CT)thick darkness.

For to Us a Child Is Born

[ab] But there will be no (CU)gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he (CV)brought into contempt the land of (CW)Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he (CX)has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.[ac]

[ad] (CY)The people (CZ)who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of (DA)deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.
(DB)You have multiplied the nation;
    you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
    as with (DC)joy at the harvest,
    as they (DD)are glad (DE)when they divide the spoil.
(DF)For the yoke of his burden,
    (DG)and the staff for his shoulder,
    the rod of his oppressor,
    you have broken as (DH)on the day of Midian.
(DI)For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
    and every garment rolled in blood
    will be burned as fuel for the fire.
(DJ)For to us a child is born,
    to us (DK)a son is given;
(DL)and the government shall be (DM)upon[ae] his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called[af]
Wonderful (DN)Counselor, (DO)Mighty God,
    (DP)Everlasting (DQ)Father, Prince of (DR)Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
    (DS)there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
(DT)with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
(DU)The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Judgment on Arrogance and Oppression

The Lord has sent a word against Jacob,
    and it will fall on Israel;
and all the people will know,
    (DV)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
    who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen,
    but we will build with dressed stones;
the sycamores have been cut down,
    but we will put cedars in their place.”
11 But the Lord raises the adversaries of Rezin against him,
    and stirs up his enemies.
12 (DW)The Syrians on the east and (DX)the Philistines on the west
    devour Israel with open mouth.
(DY)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

13 The people (DZ)did not turn to him who struck them,
    nor inquire of the Lord of hosts.
14 So the Lord cut off from Israel (EA)head and tail,
    palm branch and reed in one day—
15 (EB)the elder and honored man is the head,
    and (EC)the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;
16 for those who guide this people have been leading them astray,
    and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.
17 Therefore the Lord does not (ED)rejoice over their young men,
    and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows;
for everyone is (EE)godless and an evildoer,
    and every mouth speaks (EF)folly.[ag]
(EG)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

18 For wickedness burns like (EH)a fire;
    it consumes briers and thorns;
it kindles the thickets of the forest,
    and they roll upward in a column of smoke.
19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts
    the land is scorched,
and (EI)the people are like fuel for the fire;
    (EJ)no one spares another.
20 (EK)They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry,
    and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied;
(EL)each devours the flesh of his own arm,
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh;
    together they are (EM)against Judah.
(EN)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

Isaiah’s Commission

In the year that King Uzziah(A) died,(B) I saw the Lord,(C) high and exalted,(D) seated on a throne;(E) and the train of his robe(F) filled the temple. Above him were seraphim,(G) each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet,(H) and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy(I), holy is the Lord Almighty;(J)
    the whole earth(K) is full of his glory.”(L)

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.(M)

“Woe(N) to me!” I cried. “I am ruined!(O) For I am a man of unclean lips,(P) and I live among a people of unclean lips,(Q) and my eyes have seen(R) the King,(S) the Lord Almighty.”(T)

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal(U) in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips;(V) your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.(W)

Then I heard the voice(X) of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send?(Y) And who will go for us?(Z)

And I said, “Here am I.(AA) Send me!”

He said, “Go(AB) and tell this people:

“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
    be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’(AC)
10 Make the heart of this people calloused;(AD)
    make their ears dull
    and close their eyes.[a](AE)
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,(AF)
    understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”(AG)

11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”(AH)

And he answered:

“Until the cities lie ruined(AI)
    and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted(AJ)
    and the fields ruined and ravaged,(AK)
12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away(AL)
    and the land is utterly forsaken.(AM)
13 And though a tenth remains(AN) in the land,
    it will again be laid waste.(AO)
But as the terebinth and oak
    leave stumps(AP) when they are cut down,
    so the holy(AQ) seed will be the stump in the land.”(AR)

The Sign of Immanuel

When Ahaz(AS) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin(AT) of Aram(AU) and Pekah(AV) son of Remaliah(AW) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.

Now the house of David(AX) was told, “Aram has allied itself with[b] Ephraim(AY)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,(AZ) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.

Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,[c](BA) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.(BB) Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm(BC) and don’t be afraid.(BD) Do not lose heart(BE) because of these two smoldering stubs(BF) of firewood—because of the fierce anger(BG) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.(BH) Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s(BI) son have plotted(BJ) your ruin, saying, “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:(BK)

“‘It will not take place,
    it will not happen,(BL)
for the head of Aram is Damascus,(BM)
    and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.(BN)
Within sixty-five years
    Ephraim will be too shattered(BO) to be a people.
The head of Ephraim is Samaria,(BP)
    and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand(BQ) firm in your faith,(BR)
    you will not stand at all.’”(BS)

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the Lord your God for a sign,(BT) whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.(BU)

12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.(BV)

13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David!(BW) Is it not enough(BX) to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience(BY) of my God(BZ) also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you[d] a sign:(CA) The virgin[e](CB) will conceive and give birth to a son,(CC) and[f] will call him Immanuel.[g](CD) 15 He will be eating curds(CE) and honey(CF) when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows(CG) enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,(CH) the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.(CI) 17 The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away(CJ) from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.(CK)

Assyria, the Lord’s Instrument

18 In that day(CL) the Lord will whistle(CM) for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria.(CN) 19 They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices(CO) in the rocks, on all the thornbushes(CP) and at all the water holes. 20 In that day(CQ) the Lord will use(CR) a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River(CS)—the king of Assyria(CT)—to shave your head and private parts, and to cut off your beard(CU) also.(CV) 21 In that day,(CW) a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats.(CX) 22 And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds(CY) and honey.(CZ) 23 In that day,(DA) in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,[h](DB) there will be only briers and thorns.(DC) 24 Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers(DD) and thorns. 25 As for all the hills(DE) once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns;(DF) they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.(DG)

Isaiah and His Children as Signs

The Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll(DH) and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”[i](DI) So I called in Uriah(DJ) the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses(DK) for me. Then I made love to the prophetess,(DL) and she conceived and gave birth to a son.(DM) And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.(DN) For before the boy knows(DO) how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus(DP) and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.(DQ)

The Lord spoke to me again:

“Because this people has rejected(DR)
    the gently flowing waters of Shiloah(DS)
and rejoices over Rezin
    and the son of Remaliah,(DT)
therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
    the mighty floodwaters(DU) of the Euphrates—
    the king of Assyria(DV) with all his pomp.(DW)
It will overflow all its channels,
    run over all its banks(DX)
and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,(DY)
    passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings(DZ) will cover the breadth of your land,
    Immanuel[j]!”(EA)

Raise the war cry,[k](EB) you nations, and be shattered!(EC)
    Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare(ED) for battle, and be shattered!
    Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;(EE)
    propose your plan, but it will not stand,(EF)
    for God is with us.[l](EG)

11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,(EH) warning me not to follow(EI) the way of this people:

12 “Do not call conspiracy(EJ)
    everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,(EK)
    and do not dread it.(EL)
13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,(EM)
    he is the one you are to fear,(EN)
    he is the one you are to dread.(EO)
14 He will be a holy place;(EP)
    for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone(EQ) that causes people to stumble(ER)
    and a rock that makes them fall.(ES)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
    a trap and a snare.(ET)
15 Many of them will stumble;(EU)
    they will fall and be broken,
    they will be snared and captured.”

16 Bind up this testimony of warning(EV)
    and seal(EW) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
17 I will wait(EX) for the Lord,
    who is hiding(EY) his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him.(EZ)

18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.(FA) We are signs(FB) and symbols(FC) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.(FD)

The Darkness Turns to Light

19 When someone tells you to consult(FE) mediums and spiritists,(FF) who whisper and mutter,(FG) should not a people inquire(FH) of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 Consult God’s instruction(FI) and the testimony of warning.(FJ) If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light(FK) of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry,(FL) they will roam through the land;(FM) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse(FN) their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,(FO) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.(FP)

[m]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(FQ) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(FR) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

The people walking in darkness(FS)
    have seen a great light;(FT)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(FU)
    a light has dawned.(FV)
You have enlarged the nation(FW)
    and increased their joy;(FX)
they rejoice before you
    as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.(FY)
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(FZ)
    you have shattered(GA)
the yoke(GB) that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,(GC)
    the rod of their oppressor.(GD)
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
    and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,(GE)
    will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,(GF)
    to us a son is given,(GG)
    and the government(GH) will be on his shoulders.(GI)
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor,(GJ) Mighty God,(GK)
    Everlasting(GL) Father,(GM) Prince of Peace.(GN)
Of the greatness of his government(GO) and peace(GP)
    there will be no end.(GQ)
He will reign(GR) on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice(GS) and righteousness(GT)
    from that time on and forever.(GU)
The zeal(GV) of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

The Lord has sent a message(GW) against Jacob;
    it will fall on Israel.
All the people will know it—
    Ephraim(GX) and the inhabitants of Samaria(GY)
who say with pride
    and arrogance(GZ) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
    but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(HA)
the fig(HB) trees have been felled,
    but we will replace them with cedars.(HC)
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(HD) foes against them
    and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(HE) from the east and Philistines(HF) from the west
    have devoured(HG) Israel with open mouth.

Yet for all this, his anger(HH) is not turned away,
    his hand is still upraised.(HI)

13 But the people have not returned(HJ) to him who struck(HK) them,
    nor have they sought(HL) the Lord Almighty.
14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,
    both palm branch and reed(HM) in a single day;(HN)
15 the elders(HO) and dignitaries(HP) are the head,
    the prophets(HQ) who teach lies(HR) are the tail.
16 Those who guide(HS) this people mislead them,
    and those who are guided are led astray.(HT)
17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,(HU)
    nor will he pity(HV) the fatherless and widows,
for everyone is ungodly(HW) and wicked,(HX)
    every mouth speaks folly.(HY)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
    his hand is still upraised.(HZ)

18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire;(IA)
    it consumes briers and thorns,(IB)
it sets the forest thickets ablaze,(IC)
    so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the wrath(ID) of the Lord Almighty
    the land will be scorched(IE)
and the people will be fuel for the fire;(IF)
    they will not spare one another.(IG)
20 On the right they will devour,
    but still be hungry;(IH)

Greeting

(A)The elder to the elect lady and her children, (B)whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who (C)know (D)the truth, (E)because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:

(F)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love.

Walking in Truth and Love

(G)I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. And now I ask you, dear lady—(H)not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—(I)that we love one another. And (J)this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just (K)as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. For (L)many deceivers (M)have gone out into the world, (N)those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, (O)so that you may not lose what we[a] have worked for, but (P)may win a full reward. Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, (Q)does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching (R)has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, (S)do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him (T)takes part in his wicked works.

Final Greetings

12 (U)Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. (V)Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, (W)so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your elect sister greet you.

The elder,(A)

To the lady chosen by God(B) and to her children, whom I love in the truth(C)—and not I only, but also all who know the truth(D) because of the truth,(E) which lives in us(F) and will be with us forever:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ,(G) the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.

It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth,(H) just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning.(I) I ask that we love one another. And this is love:(J) that we walk in obedience to his commands.(K) As you have heard from the beginning,(L) his command is that you walk in love.

I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ(M) as coming in the flesh,(N) have gone out into the world.(O) Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.(P) Watch out that you do not lose what we[a] have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.(Q) Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ(R) does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.(S) 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them.(T) 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares(U) in their wicked work.

12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face,(V) so that our joy may be complete.(W)

13 The children of your sister, who is chosen by God,(X) send their greetings.
