¹² So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His ^(A)work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will ^[a]punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and ^(B)the pomp of his eyes which are raised high.”

²⁵ to ^(A)break Assyria in My land, and I will trod him down on My mountains. Then his ^(B)yoke will be removed from them and his burden removed from their shoulder.

⁷ Behold, I will put a spirit in him so that he will ^(A)hear a report and ^(B)return to his own land. And I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.”’”

The Defeat and Death of Sennacherib

³⁶ Then the ^(A)angel of Yahweh went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And ^[a]the men arose early in the morning, and behold, all of them were dead bodies. ³⁷ So Sennacherib king of Assyria set out and ^[b]returned home and lived at ^(B)Nineveh. ³⁸ Now it happened that as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of ^(C)Ararat. And ^(D)Esarhaddon his son became king in his place.
