18 and then spreads to burn up the tall trees and vineyards. Finally, everything will be destroyed—even the people. Assyria will be like a rotting log. 19 There will be a few trees left standing in the forest—so few that even a child could count them.

20 Then the people from Jacob’s family who are left living in Israel will stop depending on the one who beat them. They will learn to depend on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

18 The splendor of his forests(A) and fertile fields
    it will completely destroy,(B)
    as when a sick person wastes away.
19 And the remaining trees of his forests(C) will be so few(D)
    that a child could write them down.

The Remnant of Israel

20 In that day(E) the remnant of Israel,
    the survivors(F) of Jacob,
will no longer rely(G) on him
    who struck them down(H)
but will truly rely(I) on the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel.(J)
