Judgment on Philistia

29 “Do not rejoice, O (A)Philistia, all of you,
Because the rod that (B)struck you is broken;
For from the serpent’s root a (C)viper will come out,
And its fruit will be a (D)flying serpent.
30 [a]Those who are most (E)helpless will eat,
And the needy will lie down in security;
I will [b]destroy your root with (F)famine,
And it will kill off your survivors.
31 “Wail, O (G)gate; cry, O city;
[c]Melt away, O (H)Philistia, all of you;
For smoke comes from the (I)north,
And (J)there is no straggler in his ranks.

Prophecy against Philistia

47 That which came as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the (A)Philistines, before Pharaoh [a]conquered (B)Gaza. Thus says the Lord:

“Behold, waters are going to rise from (C)the north
And become an overflowing torrent,
And (D)overflow the land and all its fullness,
The city and those who live in it;
And the men will (E)cry out,
And every inhabitant of the land will wail.
“Because of the noise of the [b](F)galloping hoofs of his [c]stallions,
The tumult of his chariots, and the rumbling of his wheels,
The fathers have not turned back for their children,
Because of the limpness of their hands,
On account of the day that is coming
To (G)destroy all the Philistines,
To cut off from (H)Tyre and Sidon
Every ally that is left;
For the Lord is going to destroy the Philistines,
The remnant of the coastland of (I)Caphtor.
(J)Baldness has come upon Gaza;
(K)Ashkelon has been ruined.
O remnant of their valley,
How long will you (L)gash yourself?
“Ah, (M)sword of the Lord,
How long will you not be quiet?
Withdraw into your sheath;
Be at rest and stay still.
“How can [d]it be quiet,
When the Lord has (N)given it an order?
Against Ashkelon and against the seacoast—
There He has (O)assigned it.”

Moreover, what are you to Me, O (A)Tyre, Sidon and all the regions of (B)Philistia? Are you rendering Me a recompense? But if you do recompense Me, swiftly and speedily I will (C)return your recompense on your head. Since you have (D)taken My silver and My gold, brought My precious [a]treasures to your temples, and sold the (E)sons of Judah and Jerusalem to the [b]Greeks in order to remove them far from their territory, behold, I am going to (F)arouse them from the place where you have sold them, and return your recompense on your head. Also I will (G)sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the sons of Judah, and they will sell them to the (H)Sabeans, to a distant nation,” for the Lord has spoken.

For (A)Gaza will be abandoned
And Ashkelon a desolation;
(B)Ashdod will be driven out at noon
And (C)Ekron will be uprooted.
Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast,
The nation of the [a](D)Cherethites!
The word of the Lord is (E)against you,
O (F)Canaan, land of the Philistines;
And I will (G)destroy you
So that there will be (H)no inhabitant.
So the seacoast will be (I)pastures,
With [b]caves for shepherds and folds for flocks.
And the coast will be
For the (J)remnant of the house of Judah,
They will (K)pasture on it.
In the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down at evening;
For the Lord their God will (L)care for them
And (M)restore their fortune.

Ashkelon will see it and be afraid.
Gaza too will writhe in great pain;
Also Ekron, for her expectation has been confounded.
Moreover, the king will perish from Gaza,
And Ashkelon will not be inhabited.
And a [a]mongrel race will dwell in (A)Ashdod,
And I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.
And I will remove their blood from their mouth
And their detestable things from between their teeth.
Then they also will be a remnant for our God,
And be like a [b]clan in Judah,
And Ekron like a Jebusite.
