    The defenses of the Northern Kingdom, Israel, will fall—
        Ephraim’s fortress walls will tumble down;
    Damascus will no longer rule itself.
        Aram—what is left of them—will resemble Israel’s fading glory.

That’s what the Eternal, Commander of heavenly armies, says.

Eternal One: Israel will be humbled then too;
        our cousins, the children of Jacob, will lose their luster, their wealth and excess.
    The land will resemble a field stripped until it is nearly bare,
        like when the harvest has come and gone,
        like the meager grain gleaned in the valley of Rephaim.

The fortified(A) city will disappear from Ephraim,
    and royal power from Damascus;
the remnant of Aram will be
    like the glory(B) of the Israelites,”(C)
declares the Lord Almighty.

“In that day(D) the glory(E) of Jacob will fade;
    the fat of his body will waste(F) away.
It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,
    gathering(G) the grain in their arms—
as when someone gleans heads of grain(H)
    in the Valley of Rephaim.(I)
