Message to Egypt

19 The [a](A)oracle concerning (B)Egypt.

Behold, the Lord is (C)riding on a swift cloud and is about to come to Egypt;
The (D)idols of Egypt will tremble at His presence,
And the (E)heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.
“So I will incite Egyptians against Egyptians;
And they will (F)each fight against his brother and each against his neighbor,
City against city and kingdom against kingdom.
“Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be demoralized within them;
And I will confound their strategy,
So that (G)they will resort to idols and ghosts of the dead
And to [b]mediums and spiritists.
“Moreover, I will deliver the Egyptians into the hand of a (H)cruel master,
And a [c]mighty king will rule over them,” declares the Lord [d]God of hosts.

(I)The waters from the sea will dry up,
And the river will be parched and dry.
The [e](J)canals will emit a stench,
The [f](K)streams of Egypt will thin out and dry up;
(L)The reeds and rushes will rot away.
The bulrushes by the (M)Nile, by the [g]edge of the Nile
And all the sown fields by the Nile
Will become dry, be driven away, and be no more.
And the (N)fishermen will lament,
And all those who cast a [h]line into the Nile will mourn,
And those who spread nets on the waters will [i]pine away.
Moreover, the manufacturers of linen made from combed flax
And the weavers of white (O)cloth will be [j]utterly dejected.
10 And [k]the (P)pillars of Egypt will be crushed;
All the hired laborers will be grieved in soul.

11 The princes of [l](Q)Zoan are mere fools;
The advice of Pharaoh’s wisest advisers has become [m]stupid.
How can you men say to Pharaoh,
“I am a son of the (R)wise, a son of ancient kings”?
12 Well then, where are your wise men?
Please let them tell you,
And let them [n]understand what the Lord of hosts
Has (S)purposed against Egypt.
13 The princes of [o]Zoan have acted foolishly,
The princes of (T)Memphis are deluded;
Those who are the (U)cornerstone of her tribes
Have [p]led Egypt astray.
14 The Lord has mixed within her a spirit of (V)distortion;
(W)They have led Egypt astray in all [q]that it does,
As a (X)drunken man [r]staggers in his vomit.
15 There will be no work for Egypt
(Y)Which its head or tail, its palm branch or bulrush, may do.

16 In that day the Egyptians will become like women, and they will tremble and be in (Z)dread because of the (AA)waving of the hand of the Lord of hosts, which He is going to wave over them. 17 The land of Judah will become a [s]terror to Egypt; everyone [t]to whom it is mentioned will be in dread of it, because of the (AB)purpose of the Lord of hosts which He is purposing against them.

18 In that day five cities in the land of Egypt will be speaking the language of Canaan and (AC)swearing allegiance to the Lord of hosts; one will be called the City of [u]Destruction.

19 In that day there will be an (AD)altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a (AE)pillar to the Lord near its border. 20 It will become a sign and a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the Lord because of oppressors, and He will send them a (AF)Savior and a [v](AG)Champion, and He will deliver them. 21 Thus the Lord will make Himself known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the Lord in that day. They will even worship with (AH)sacrifice and offering, and will make a vow to the Lord and perform it. 22 The Lord will strike Egypt, striking but (AI)healing; so they will (AJ)return to the Lord, and He will respond to them and will heal them.

23 In that day there will be a (AK)highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrians will come into Egypt and the Egyptians into Assyria, and the Egyptians will (AL)worship with the Assyrians.

24 In that day Israel will be the third party with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth, 25 whom the Lord of hosts has blessed, saying, “Blessed is (AM)Egypt My people, and Assyria (AN)the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.”

15 For thus the Lord, the God of Israel, says to me, “Take this (A)cup of the wine of wrath from My hand and cause all the nations to whom I send you to drink it. 16 They will (B)drink and stagger and go mad because of the sword that I will send among them.”

17 Then I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and (C)made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it: 18 (D)Jerusalem and the cities of Judah and its kings and its princes, to make them a ruin, a horror, a hissing and a curse, as it is this day; 19 (E)Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his princes and all his people;

Defeat of Pharaoh Foretold

46 That which came as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet (A)concerning the nations.

To (B)Egypt, concerning the army of (C)Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the Euphrates River at (D)Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the (E)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

13 This is the [a]message which the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the (A)coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to (B)smite the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare in Egypt and proclaim in (C)Migdol,
Proclaim also in Memphis and (D)Tahpanhes;
Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,
For the (E)sword has devoured those around you.’
15 “Why have your (F)mighty ones become prostrate?
They do not stand because the Lord has (G)thrust them down.
16 “They have repeatedly (H)stumbled;
Indeed, they have fallen one against another.
Then they said, ‘Get up! And (I)let us go back
To our own people and our native land
Away from the [b](J)sword of the oppressor.’
17 [c]They cried there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but (K)a big noise;
He has let the appointed time pass by!’
18 “As I live,” declares the (L)King
Whose name is the Lord of hosts,
“Surely one shall come who looms up like (M)Tabor among the mountains,
Or like (N)Carmel by the sea.
19 “Make your baggage ready for (O)exile,
O (P)daughter dwelling in Egypt,
For (Q)Memphis will become a desolation;
It will even be burned down and [d]bereft of inhabitants.
20 “Egypt is a pretty (R)heifer,
But a [e]horsefly is coming (S)from the north—it is coming!
21 “Also her (T)mercenaries in her midst
Are like [f]fattened (U)calves,
For even they too have turned back and have fled away together;
They did not stand their ground.
For the day of their calamity has come upon them,
The time of their (V)punishment.
22 “Its sound moves along like a serpent;
For they move on [g]like an army
And come to her as woodcutters with axes.
23 “They have cut down her (W)forest,” declares the Lord;
“Surely it will no more be found,
Even though [h]they are now more numerous than (X)locusts
And are without number.
24 “The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,
Given over to the [i]power of the (Y)people of the north.”

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of (Z)Thebes, and (AA)Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her (AB)gods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who (AC)trust in him. 26 I shall give them over to the [j]power of those who are (AD)seeking their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his [k]officers. (AE)Afterwards, however, it will be inhabited as in the days of old,” declares the Lord.
