¹⁰ The fortified city stands desolate,^(A)
    an abandoned settlement, forsaken^(B) like the wilderness;
there the calves graze,^(C)
    there they lie down;^(D)
    they strip its branches bare.
¹¹ When its twigs are dry, they are broken off^(E)
    and women come and make fires^(F) with them.
For this is a people without understanding;^(G)
    so their Maker has no compassion on them,
    and their Creator^(H) shows them no favor.^(I)

¹⁷ They will devour^(A) your harvests and food,
    devour^(B) your sons and daughters;
they will devour^(C) your flocks and herds,
    devour your vines and fig trees.^(D)
With the sword^(E) they will destroy
    the fortified cities^(F) in which you trust.^(G)

    those who are coming from the north.^(A)
Where is the flock^(B) that was entrusted to you,
    the sheep of which you boasted?
