8 You contended with them [a]by banishing them, by (A)driving them away.
With His fierce wind He has expelled them on the day of the (B)east wind.
9 Therefore through this Jacob’s wrongdoing will be (C)forgiven;
And this will be [b]the full price of the [c](D)pardoning of his sin:
When he makes all the (E)altar stones like pulverized chalk stones;
When [d]Asherim and incense altars will not stand.
10 For the fortified city is (F)isolated,
A [e]homestead deserted and abandoned like the desert;
(G)There the calf will graze,
And there it will lie down and [f]feed on its branches.

8 By warfare[a] and exile(A) you contend with her—
with his fierce blast he drives her out,
as on a day the east wind(B) blows.
9 By this, then, will Jacob’s guilt be atoned(C) for,
and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin:(D)
When he makes all the altar stones(E)
to be like limestone crushed to pieces,
no Asherah poles[b](F) or incense altars(G)
will be left standing.
10 The fortified city stands desolate,(H)
an abandoned settlement, forsaken(I) like the wilderness;
there the calves graze,(J)
there they lie down;(K)
they strip its branches bare.
