26 “(A)Have you not heard?
Long ago I did it,
From ancient times I (B)planned it.
Now (C)I have brought it to pass,
That (D)you should turn fortified cities into (E)ruinous heaps.
27 “Therefore their inhabitants were short of strength,
They were dismayed and put to shame;
They were as the (F)vegetation of the field and as the green herb,
As (G)grass on the housetops [a]is scorched before it is grown up.
28 “But I (H)know your sitting down
And your going out and your coming in
And your raging against Me.

that you have turned fortified cities

27 Their people, drained of power,
are dismayed and put to shame.
They are like plants in the field,
like tender green shoots,
like grass(D) sprouting on the roof,(E)
scorched[a] before it grows up.
