Footnotes

  1. 61:6 The bestowal of a new name suggests a new identity and mission. The whole people will be priests (cf. Ex 19:6), even ministering to nations who will serve God’s people.
  2. 61:7 Twofold: Israel was punished double for infidelity (40:2); the blessings of its restoration will also be double.

Strangers(A) will shepherd your flocks;
    foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
And you will be called priests(B) of the Lord,
    you will be named ministers of our God.
You will feed on the wealth(C) of nations,
    and in their riches you will boast.

Instead of your shame(D)
    you will receive a double(E) portion,
and instead of disgrace
    you will rejoice in your inheritance.
And so you will inherit(F) a double portion in your land,
    and everlasting joy(G) will be yours.
