God Will Punish Israel
8 The Lord gave a command against Jacob and someone in Israel fell.[a] 9 So all the people in Ephraim, including the ruler in Samaria, learned their lesson.
Those people are very proud and boastful now. They say, 10 “Yes, those bricks fell, but we will rebuild with strong stone. Yes, those little trees were chopped down, but we will plant new trees. And they will be large, strong trees.”

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel
8 The Lord has sent a message(A) against Jacob;
it will fall on Israel.
9 All the people will know it—
Ephraim(B) and the inhabitants of Samaria(C)—
who say with pride
and arrogance(D) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(E)
the fig(F) trees have been felled,
but we will replace them with cedars.(G)”
