⁵ Then they will be ^(A)terrified and ashamed because of Cush their hope and Egypt their ^(B)pride. ⁶ So the inhabitants of this coastland will say on that day, ‘Behold, such is our hope, where we fled ^(C)for help to be saved from the king of Assyria; and ^(D)how are we ourselves to escape?’”

⁶ Behold, you have relied on the ^(A)staff of this broken reed, on Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his ^[a]hand and pierce it. ^(B)So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him.

¹⁸ For this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “As My ^(A)anger and wrath have gushed out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so My wrath will gush out on you when you enter Egypt. And you will become a ^(B)curse, an object of horror, ^[a]an imprecation, and a disgrace; and ^(C)you will not see this place again.”

²² And now you shall know for certain that you will ^(A)die by the sword, by famine, or by plague in the ^(B)place where you desire to go to reside.
