¹⁸ On that day the deaf will hear^(A)
the words of a document,
and out of a deep darkness
the eyes of the blind will see.

³ Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed,
and the ears of those who hear will listen.^(A)

⁸ Watch! I am going to bring them from the northern land.
I will gather them from remote regions of the earth^(A)—
the blind and the lame will be with them,
along with those who are pregnant and those about to give birth.
They will return here as a great assembly!^(B)
9 They will come weeping,
but I will bring them back with consolation.^[a](C)
I will lead them to wadis filled with water
by a smooth way where they will not stumble,^(D)
for I am Israel’s Father,
and Ephraim is My firstborn.

⁷⁸ Because of our God’s merciful compassion,
the Dawn from on high^(A) will visit us
⁷⁹ to shine on those who live in darkness
and the shadow of death,^(B)
to guide our feet into the way of peace.
