29 1 A prophecy against Jerusalem. 13 The vengeance of God on them that follow the traditions of men.
1 Ah [a]altar, altar of the city that David dwelt in: add year unto year: [b]let them kill lambs.
2 But I will bring the altar into distress, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow, and it shall be unto me like [c]an altar.
3 And I will besiege thee as a circle, and fight against thee on a mount, and will cast up ramparts against thee.
4 So shalt thou be humbled, and shalt speak out of the [d]ground, and thy speech shall be as out of the dust: thy voice also shall be out of the ground like him that hath a spirit of divination, and thy talking shall whisper out of the dust.
5 Moreover, multitude of thy [e]strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of strong men shall be as chaff that passeth away: and it shall be in a moment, even suddenly.
6 Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts with thunder, and shaking, and a great noise, a whirlwind, and a tempest, and a flame of a devouring fire.
7 And the [f]multitude of all the nations that fight against the altar, shall be as a dream or vision by night: even all they that make the war against it, and strongholds against it, and lay siege unto it.
8 And it shall be like as an hungry man dreameth, and behold, [g]he eateth: and when he awaketh, his soul is empty: or like as a thirsty man dreameth, and lo, he is drinking, and when he awaketh, behold, he is faint, and his soul longeth: so shall the multitude of all nations be that fight against mount Zion.
9 [h]Stay yourselves and wonder: they are blind, and make you blind: they are drunken, but not with wine: they stagger, but not by strong drink.
10 For the Lord hath covered you with a spirit of slumber, and hath shut up your eyes: the Prophet, and your chief Seers hath he covered.
11 And the vision of them all is become unto you, as the words of a book that is sealed up, which they deliver to one that can read, saying, Read this, I pray thee. Then shall he say, I [i]cannot; for it is sealed.
12 And the book is given unto him that cannot read, saying, Read this, I pray thee. And he shall say, I cannot read.
13 Therefore the Lord said, Because this people [j]come near unto me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips, but have removed their heart far from me, and their [k]fear toward me was taught by the precept of men,
14 Therefore behold, I will again do a marvelous work in this people, even a marvelous work, and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall [l]perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
15 Woe unto them that [m]seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord: for their works are in darkness, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?
16 Your turning of devices shall it not be esteemed [n]as the potter’s clay? for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or the thing formed, say of him that fashioned it, He had none understanding?
17 Is it not yet but a little while, and Lebanon shall be [o]turned into Carmel? and Carmel shall be counted as a forest?
18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
19 The meek in the Lord shall receive joy again, and the poor men shall rejoice in the Holy one of Israel.
20 For the cruel man shall cease, and the scornful shall be consumed: and all that hasted to iniquity, shall be cut off:
21 Which made a man to sin in the [p]word, and took him in a snare: which reproved them in the gate, and made the just to fall without cause.
22 Therefore thus saith the Lord unto the house of Jacob, even he that redeemed Abraham: Jacob shall not now be confounded, neither now shall his face be pale.
23 But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my Name, and sanctify the Holy one of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.
24 Then they that erred in spirit, [q]shall have understanding, and they that murmured, shall learn doctrine.

- Isaiah 29:1 The Hebrew word Ariel signifieth the Lion of God, and signifieth the Altar, because the altar seemed to devour the sacrifice that was offered to God, as Ezek. 43:16.
- Isaiah 29:1 Your vain confidence in your sacrifices shall not last long.
- Isaiah 29:2 Your city shall be full of blood, as an altar whereon they sacrifice.
- Isaiah 29:4 Thy speech shall be no more so lofty, but abased and low as the very charmers, which are in low places, and whisper, so that their voice can scarce be heard.
- Isaiah 29:5 Thine hired soldiers in whom thou trustest, shall be destroyed as dust or chaff in a whirlwind.
- Isaiah 29:7 The enemies that I will bring to destroy thee, and that which thou makest thy vain trust, shall come at unawares, even as a dream in the night. Some read, as if this were a comfort to the Church for the destruction of their enemies.
- Isaiah 29:8 That is, he thinketh that he eateth.
- Isaiah 29:9 Muse hereon as long as ye list, yet shall ye find nothing but occasion to be astonied: for your Prophets are blind, and therefore cannot direct you.
- Isaiah 29:11 Meaning, that it is all alike, either to read, or not to read, except God open the heart to understand.
- Isaiah 29:13 Because they are hypocrites and not sincere in heart, as Matt. 15:8.
- Isaiah 29:13 That is, their religion was learned by man’s doctrine, and not by my word.
- Isaiah 29:14 Meaning, that where as God is not worshipped according to his word, both magistrates and ministers are but fools and without understanding.
- Isaiah 29:15 This is spoken of them which in heart despised God’s word, and mocked at the admonitions, but outwardly bare a good face.
- Isaiah 29:16 For all your craft saith the Lord, you cannot be able to escape mine hands no more than the clay, that is in the potter’s hands, hath power to deliver itself.
- Isaiah 29:17 Shall there not be a change of all things? And Carmel that is a plentiful place in respect of that it shall be then, may be taken as a forest, as Isa. 32:15, and thus he speaketh to comfort the faithful.
- Isaiah 29:21 They that went about to find fault with the Prophet’s words, and would not abide admonitions, but would entangle them and bring them into danger.
- Isaiah 29:24 Signifying, that except God give understanding, and knowledge, man cannot but still err and murmur against him.

Woe to David’s City
29 Woe(A) to you, Ariel, Ariel,(B)
the city(C) where David settled!
Add year to year
and let your cycle of festivals(D) go on.
2 Yet I will besiege Ariel;(E)
she will mourn and lament,(F)
she will be to me like an altar hearth.[a](G)
3 I will encamp against you on all sides;
I will encircle(H) you with towers
and set up my siege works(I) against you.
4 Brought low, you will speak from the ground;
your speech will mumble(J) out of the dust.(K)
Your voice will come ghostlike(L) from the earth;
out of the dust your speech will whisper.(M)
5 But your many enemies will become like fine dust,(N)
the ruthless(O) hordes like blown chaff.(P)
Suddenly,(Q) in an instant,
6 the Lord Almighty will come(R)
with thunder(S) and earthquake(T) and great noise,
with windstorm and tempest(U) and flames of a devouring fire.(V)
7 Then the hordes of all the nations(W) that fight against Ariel,(X)
that attack her and her fortress and besiege her,
will be as it is with a dream,(Y)
with a vision in the night—
8 as when a hungry person dreams of eating,
but awakens(Z) hungry still;
as when a thirsty person dreams of drinking,
but awakens faint and thirsty still.(AA)
So will it be with the hordes of all the nations
that fight against Mount Zion.(AB)
9 Be stunned and amazed,(AC)
blind yourselves and be sightless;(AD)
be drunk,(AE) but not from wine,(AF)
stagger,(AG) but not from beer.
10 The Lord has brought over you a deep sleep:(AH)
He has sealed your eyes(AI) (the prophets);(AJ)
he has covered your heads (the seers).(AK)
11 For you this whole vision(AL) is nothing but words sealed(AM) in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I can’t; it is sealed.” 12 Or if you give the scroll to someone who cannot read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I don’t know how to read.”
13 The Lord says:
“These people(AN) come near to me with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,(AO)
but their hearts are far from me.(AP)
Their worship of me
is based on merely human rules they have been taught.[b](AQ)
14 Therefore once more I will astound these people
with wonder upon wonder;(AR)
the wisdom of the wise(AS) will perish,
the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.(AT)”
15 Woe to those who go to great depths
to hide(AU) their plans from the Lord,
who do their work in darkness and think,
“Who sees us?(AV) Who will know?”(AW)
16 You turn things upside down,
as if the potter were thought to be like the clay!(AX)
Shall what is formed say to the one who formed(AY) it,
“You did not make me”?
Can the pot say to the potter,(AZ)
“You know nothing”?(BA)
17 In a very short time,(BB) will not Lebanon(BC) be turned into a fertile field(BD)
and the fertile field seem like a forest?(BE)
18 In that day(BF) the deaf(BG) will hear the words of the scroll,
and out of gloom and darkness(BH)
the eyes of the blind will see.(BI)
19 Once more the humble(BJ) will rejoice in the Lord;
the needy(BK) will rejoice in the Holy One(BL) of Israel.
20 The ruthless(BM) will vanish,(BN)
the mockers(BO) will disappear,
and all who have an eye for evil(BP) will be cut down—
21 those who with a word make someone out to be guilty,
who ensnare the defender in court(BQ)
and with false testimony(BR) deprive the innocent of justice.(BS)
22 Therefore this is what the Lord, who redeemed(BT) Abraham,(BU) says to the descendants of Jacob:
“No longer will Jacob be ashamed;(BV)
no longer will their faces grow pale.(BW)
23 When they see among them their children,(BX)
the work of my hands,(BY)
they will keep my name holy;(BZ)
they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One(CA) of Jacob,
and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
24 Those who are wayward(CB) in spirit will gain understanding;(CC)
those who complain will accept instruction.”(CD)
