James 4:3-5

3 You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures.(A) 4 Adulterers![a] Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.(B) 5 Or do you suppose that the scripture speaks to no purpose? Does the spirit that God caused to dwell[b] in us desire envy?(C)

3 When you ask, you do not receive,(A) because you ask with wrong motives,(B) that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
4 You adulterous(C) people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world(D) means enmity against God?(E) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.(F) 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]?(G)
