19 Your own sin will punish you. Your turning away from the Lord will punish you. So know and see that it is sinful and bitter for you to leave the Lord your God. You have no fear of Me,” says the Lord God of All.

20 “Long ago I broke the load from your neck and tore off your chains. But you said, ‘I will not serve!’ For on every high hill and under every green tree you have lain down as a woman who sells the use of her body. 21 Yet I planted you as a vine of much worth, in every way a true seed. How then have you turned away from Me and become a wild vine?

19 Your wickedness will punish you;
your backsliding(A) will rebuke(B) you.
Consider then and realize
how evil and bitter(C) it is for you
when you forsake(D) the Lord your God
and have no awe(E) of me,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.
20 “Long ago you broke off your yoke(F)
and tore off your bonds;(G)
you said, ‘I will not serve you!’(H)
Indeed, on every high hill(I)
and under every spreading tree(J)
you lay down as a prostitute.(K)
21 I had planted(L) you like a choice vine(M)
of sound and reliable stock.
How then did you turn against me
into a corrupt,(N) wild vine?
