23 We are weary of worshiping idols on the hills and of having orgies on the mountains. It is all a farce. Only in the Lord our God can Israel ever find her help and her salvation. 24 From our childhood we have seen everything our fathers had—flocks and herds and sons and daughters—squandered on priests and idols. 25 We lie in shame and in dishonor, for we and our fathers have sinned from childhood against the Lord our God; we have not obeyed him.

23 Surely the idolatrous commotion on the hills(A)
    and mountains is a deception;
surely in the Lord our God
    is the salvation(B) of Israel.
24 From our youth shameful(C) gods have consumed
    the fruits of our ancestors’ labor—
their flocks and herds,
    their sons and daughters.
25 Let us lie down in our shame,(D)
    and let our disgrace cover us.
We have sinned(E) against the Lord our God,
    both we and our ancestors;(F)
from our youth(G) till this day
    we have not obeyed(H) the Lord our God.”
