² The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging^(A) Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined^(B) in the courtyard of the guard^(C) in the royal palace of Judah.

⁶ So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard.^(A) They lowered Jeremiah by ropes^(B) into the cistern; it had no water in it,^(C) only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.^(D)

¹³ and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.^(A)

²⁸ And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard^(A) until the day Jerusalem was captured.

The Fall of Jerusalem^(B)

This is how Jerusalem^(C) was taken:

¹³ So Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard, Nebushazban a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officers^(A) of the king of Babylon ¹⁴ sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard.^(B) They turned him over to Gedaliah^(C) son of Ahikam,^(D) the son of Shaphan,^(E) to take him back to his home. So he remained among his own people.^(F)
