when the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the remaining cities of Judah, that is, (A)Lachish and (B)Azekah, for they alone remained as (C)fortified cities among the cities of Judah.

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had (D)made a covenant with all the people who were in Jerusalem to (E)proclaim [a]release to them: that each man should set free his male servant and each man his female servant, a (F)Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman; so that (G)no one should keep them, a Jew his brother, in bondage.

Freedom for Slaves

The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people(C) in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom(D) for the slaves. Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and female; no one was to hold a fellow Hebrew in bondage.(E)
