6 But they answered, “We will not drink wine, for Jonadab, the son of Rechab, our ancestor,[a] commanded us, saying,[b] ‘You shall not drink wine, you or your children, forever.[c] 7 And you shall not build a house, and you shall not sow seed, and you shall not plant a vineyard, and it shall not be for you, but in tents you shall live all your days, so that you may live many days on the surface of the land where you are dwelling as aliens.’ 8 And we obeyed the voice of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, our ancestor,[d] in all that he commanded us, not to drink wine all our days, ourselves, our wives, our sons, or our daughters,

New International Version
6 But they replied, “We do not drink wine, because our forefather Jehonadab[a](A) son of Rekab gave us this command: ‘Neither you nor your descendants must ever drink wine.(B) 7 Also you must never build houses, sow seed or plant vineyards; you must never have any of these things, but must always live in tents.(C) Then you will live a long time in the land(D) where you are nomads.’ 8 We have obeyed everything our forefather(E) Jehonadab son of Rekab commanded us. Neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters have ever drunk wine
