38 On all the rooftops of Moab and in her public squares, everyone is mourning because I have shattered Moab like a jar no one wants.”(A) This is the Lord’s declaration. 39 “How broken it is! They wail! How Moab has turned his back! He is ashamed. Moab will become a laughingstock and a shock to all those around him.”(B)

40 For this is what the Lord says:

Look! He will swoop down like an eagle
and spread his wings against Moab.(C)

    for I have broken Moab
    like a jar(B) that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.
39 “How shattered(C) she is! How they wail!
    How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,(D)
    an object of horror to all those around her.”

40 This is what the Lord says:

“Look! An eagle is swooping(E) down,
    spreading its wings(F) over Moab.
