Therefore (A)a lion from the forest shall slay them,
(B)A wolf of the deserts shall destroy them;
(C)A leopard will watch over their cities.
Everyone who goes out from there shall be torn in pieces,
Because their transgressions are many;
Their backslidings have increased.

“How shall I pardon you for this?
Your children have forsaken Me
And (D)sworn by those (E)that are not gods.
(F)When I had fed them to the full,
Then they committed adultery
And assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
(G)They were like well-fed lusty stallions;
Every one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.

    to tear to pieces any who venture out,
for their rebellion is great
    and their backslidings many.(D)

I supplied all their needs,
    yet they committed adultery(G)
    and thronged to the houses of prostitutes.(H)
They are well-fed, lusty stallions,
    each neighing for another man’s wife.(I)
