Grief over Zion

9 ^[a]^(A)Oh, that my head were waters
And my eyes a fountain of tears,
That I might weep day and night
For those slain of the ^(B)daughter of my people!
²^[b]^(C)Oh that I had in the desert
A travelers’ lodging place;
So that I might leave my people
And go away from them!
For all of them are ^(D)adulterers,
An assembly of ^(E)treacherous people.
³“They ^(F)bend their tongues like their bows;
Lies and not truth prevail in the land;
For they ^(G)proceed from evil to evil,
And they ^(H)do not know Me,” declares the Lord.
⁴“Let everyone ^(I)be on guard against his neighbor,
And ^(J)do not trust any brother;
Because every ^(K)brother utterly ^[c]betrays,
And every neighbor ^(L)goes about as a slanderer.
⁵Everyone ^(M)deceives his neighbor
And does not speak the truth.
They have taught their tongue to speak lies;
They ^(N)weary themselves committing wrongdoing.
⁶Your ^(O)dwelling is in the midst of deceit;
Through deceit they ^(P)refuse to know Me,” declares the Lord.

Jeremiah’s Prayer and God’s Answer

¹⁵^(A)You know, Lord;
Remember me, take notice of me,
And ^(B)take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
Do not, in view of Your patience, take me away;
Know that ^(C)for Your sake I endure reproach.
¹⁶Your words were found and I ^(D)ate them,
And Your ^(E)words became a joy to me and the delight of my heart;
For I have been ^(F)called by Your name,
Lord God of armies.
¹⁷I ^(G)did not sit in a circle of revelers and celebrate.
Because of Your hand upon me I sat ^(H)alone,
For You ^(I)filled me with indignation.
¹⁸Why has my pain been endless
And my ^(J)wound incurable, refusing to be healed?
Will You indeed be to me ^(K)like a deceptive stream
With water that is unreliable?

¹⁹Therefore, this is what the Lord says:
“^(L)If you return, then I will restore you—
^(M)You will stand before Me;
And ^(N)if you extract the precious from the worthless,
You will become ^[a]My spokesman.
They, for their part, may turn to you,
But as for you, you are not to turn to them.
²⁰Then I will ^(O)make you to this people
A fortified wall of bronze;
And though they fight against you,
They will not prevail over you;
For ^(P)I am with you to save you
And rescue you,” declares the Lord.
²¹“So I will ^(Q)rescue you from the hand of the wicked,
And I will ^(R)redeem you from the ^[b]grasp of the violent.”
