Restoration of Israel

30 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you. The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity[a] and restore them to the land I gave to their ancestors to possess,” says the Lord.’

These are the words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah: ‘This is what the Lord says:

‘“Cries of fear are heard –
    terror, not peace.
Ask and see:
    can a man bear children?
Then why do I see every strong man
with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labour,
    every face turned deathly pale?
How awful that day will be!
No other will be like it.
It will be a time of trouble for Jacob,
but he will be saved out of it.

Jesus’ sorrow for Jerusalem

32 He replied, ‘Go and tell that fox, “I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.” 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day – for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!

34 ‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”[a]
