Job Says God Will Deal with the Wicked

21 Then Job [a]answered,

“Listen carefully to my speech,
And let this be your way of consolation.
“Bear with me that I may speak;
Then after I have spoken, you may (A)mock.
“As for me, is (B)my complaint [b]to man?
And (C)why should [c]I not be impatient?
“Look at me, and be astonished,
And (D)put your hand over your mouth.
“Even when I remember, I am disturbed,
And (E)horror takes hold of my flesh.
“Why (F)do the wicked still live,
Continue on, also become very (G)powerful?
“Their [d](H)descendants are established with them in their sight,
And their offspring before their eyes,
Their houses (I)are safe from fear,
And the rod of God is not on them.
10 “His ox mates [e]without fail;
His cow calves and does not abort.
11 “They send forth their little ones like the flock,
And their children skip about.
12 “They [f]sing to the timbrel and harp
And rejoice at the sound of the flute.
13 “They (J)spend their days in prosperity,
And [g]suddenly they go down to [h]Sheol.
14 “They say to God, ‘(K)Depart from us!
We do not even desire the knowledge of Your ways.
15 [i]Who is [j]the Almighty, that we should serve Him,
And (L)what would we gain if we entreat Him?’
16 “Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand;
The (M)counsel of the wicked is far from me.

17 “How often is (N)the lamp of the wicked put out,
Or does their (O)calamity fall on them?
Does [k]God apportion destruction in His anger?
18 “Are they as (P)straw before the wind,
And like (Q)chaff which the storm carries away?
19 You say, ‘(R)God stores away [l]a man’s iniquity for his sons.’
Let [m]God repay him so that he may know it.
20 “Let his (S)own eyes see his decay,
And let him (T)drink of the wrath of [n]the Almighty.
21 “For what does he care for his household [o]after him,
When the number of his months is cut off?
22 “Can anyone (U)teach God knowledge,
In that He (V)judges those on high?
23 “One (W)dies in his full strength,
Being wholly at ease and [p]satisfied;
24 His [q]sides are filled out with fat,
And the (X)marrow of his bones is moist,
25 While another dies with a bitter soul,
Never even [r]tasting anything good.
26 “Together they (Y)lie down in the dust,
And (Z)worms cover them.

27 “Behold, I know your thoughts,
And the plans by which you would wrong me.
28 “For you say, ‘Where is the house of (AA)the nobleman,
And where is the (AB)tent, the dwelling places of the wicked?’
29 “Have you not asked wayfaring men,
And do you not recognize their [s]witness?
30 “For the (AC)wicked is reserved for the day of calamity;
They will be led forth at (AD)the day of fury.
31 “Who will [t]confront him with his actions,
And who will repay him for what he has done?
32 “While he is carried to the grave,
Men will keep watch over his tomb.
33 “The (AE)clods of the valley will [u]gently cover him;
Moreover, (AF)all men will [v]follow after him,
While countless ones go before him.
34 “How then will you vainly (AG)comfort me,
For your answers remain full of [w]falsehood?”

Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job

22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite [a]responded,

“Can a vigorous (A)man be of use to God,
Or a wise man be useful to himself?
“Is there any pleasure to [b]the Almighty if you are righteous,
Or profit if you make your ways perfect?
“Is it because of your [c]reverence that He reproves you,
That He (B)enters into judgment against you?
“Is not (C)your wickedness great,
And your iniquities without end?
“For you have (D)taken pledges of your brothers without cause,
And (E)stripped [d]men naked.
“To the weary you have (F)given no water to drink,
And from the hungry you have (G)withheld bread.
“But the earth (H)belongs to the (I)mighty man,
And (J)the honorable man dwells in it.
“You have sent (K)widows away empty,
And the [e]strength of the (L)orphans has been crushed.
10 “Therefore (M)snares surround you,
And sudden (N)dread terrifies you,
11 Or (O)darkness, so that you cannot see,
And an (P)abundance of water covers you.

12 “Is not God (Q)in the height of heaven?
Look also at the [f]distant stars, how high they are!
13 “You say, ‘(R)What does God know?
Can He judge through the thick darkness?
14 (S)Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see;
And He walks on the [g]vault of heaven.’
15 “Will you keep to the ancient path
Which (T)wicked men have trod,
16 Who were snatched away (U)before their time,
Whose (V)foundations were [h]washed away by a river?
17 “They (W)said to God, ‘Depart from us!’
And ‘What can [i]the Almighty do to them?’
18 “Yet He (X)filled their houses with good things;
But (Y)the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19 “The (Z)righteous see and are glad,
And the innocent mock them,
20 Saying, ‘Truly our adversaries are cut off,
And their [j]abundance (AA)the fire has consumed.’

21 [k](AB)Yield now and be at peace with Him;
Thereby good will come to you.
22 “Please receive [l](AC)instruction from His mouth
And establish His words in your heart.
23 “If you (AD)return to [m]the Almighty, you will be [n]restored;
If you (AE)remove unrighteousness far from your tent,
24 And (AF)place your [o]gold in the dust,
And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,
25 Then [p]the Almighty will be your [q]gold
And choice silver to you.
26 “For then you will (AG)delight in [r]the Almighty
And lift up your face to God.
27 “You will (AH)pray to Him, and (AI)He will hear you;
And you will pay your vows.
28 “You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you;
And (AJ)light will shine on your ways.
29 “When [s]you are cast down, you will speak with [t]confidence,
And the [u](AK)humble person He will save.
30 “He will deliver one who is not innocent,
And he will be (AL)delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”

Job Says He Longs for God

23 Then Job [a]replied,

“Even today my (A)complaint is rebellion;
[b]His hand is (B)heavy despite my groaning.
“Oh that I knew where I might find Him,
That I might come to His seat!
“I would (C)present my case before Him
And fill my mouth with arguments.
“I would learn the words which He would [c]answer,
And perceive what He would say to me.
“Would He contend with me by (D)the greatness of His power?
No, surely He would pay attention to me.
“There the upright would (E)reason with Him;
And I [d]would be (F)delivered forever from my Judge.

“Behold, I go forward but He is not there,
And backward, but I (G)cannot perceive Him;
When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him;
He turns on the right, I cannot see Him.
10 “But He knows the [e]way I take;
When He has (H)tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
11 “My foot has (I)held fast to His path;
I have kept His way and not turned aside.
12 “I have not departed from the command of His lips;
I have treasured the (J)words of His mouth [f]more than my [g]necessary food.
13 “But He is unique and who can turn Him?
And what His soul desires, that He does.
14 “For He performs what is appointed for me,
And many such decrees are with Him.
15 “Therefore, I would be dismayed at His presence;
When I consider, I am terrified of Him.
16 It is God who has made my (K)heart faint,
And the Almighty who has dismayed me,
17 But I (L)am not silenced by the darkness,
Nor (M)deep gloom which covers me.

Job Says God Seems to Ignore Wrongs

24 (A)Why are [a]times not stored up by the Almighty,
And why do those who know Him not see (B)His days?
[b]Some (C)remove the landmarks;
They seize and [c]devour flocks.
“They drive away the donkeys of the (D)orphans;
They take the (E)widow’s ox for a pledge.
“They push (F)the needy aside from the road;
The (G)poor of the land are made to hide themselves altogether.
“Behold, as (H)wild donkeys in the wilderness
They (I)go forth seeking food in their activity,
As [d]bread for their children in the desert.
“They harvest their fodder in the field
And glean the vineyard of the wicked.
(J)They spend the night naked, without clothing,
And have no covering against the cold.
“They are wet with the mountain rains
And hug the rock for want of a shelter.
[e]Others snatch the (K)orphan from the breast,
And against the poor they take a pledge.
10 “They cause the poor to go about naked without clothing,
And they take away the sheaves from the hungry.
11 “Within the walls they produce oil;
They tread wine presses but thirst.
12 “From the city men groan,
And the souls of the wounded cry out;
Yet God (L)does not pay attention to folly.

13 [f]Others have been with those who rebel against the light;
They do not want to know its ways
Nor abide in its paths.
14 “The murderer (M)arises at dawn;
He (N)kills the poor and the needy,
And at night he is as a thief.
15 “The eye of the (O)adulterer waits for the twilight,
Saying, ‘No eye will see me.’
And he [g]disguises his face.
16 “In the dark they (P)dig into houses,
They (Q)shut themselves up by day;
They do not know the light.
17 “For the morning is the same to him as thick darkness,
For he is familiar with the (R)terrors of thick darkness.

18 “They are [h](S)insignificant on the surface of the water;
Their portion is (T)cursed on the earth.
They do not turn [i]toward the (U)vineyards.
19 “Drought and heat [j](V)consume the snow waters,
So does [k](W)Sheol those who have sinned.
20 “A [l](X)mother will forget him;
The (Y)worm feeds sweetly till he is (Z)no longer remembered.
And wickedness will be broken (AA)like a tree.
21 “He wrongs the [m]barren woman
And does no good for (AB)the widow.
22 “But He drags off the valiant by (AC)His power;
He rises, but (AD)no one has assurance of life.
23 “He provides them (AE)with security, and they are supported;
And His (AF)eyes are on their ways.
24 “They are exalted a (AG)little while, then they are gone;
Moreover, they are (AH)brought low and like everything gathered up;
Even like the heads of grain they are cut off.
25 “Now if it is not so, (AI)who can prove me a liar,
And make my speech worthless?”
