⁸ For what hope have the godless^(A) when they are cut off,
    when God takes away their life?^(B)
9 Does God listen to their cry
    when distress comes upon them?^(C)
10 Will they find delight in the Almighty?^(D)
    Will they call on God at all times?

¹¹ “I will teach you about the power of God;
    the ways^(E) of the Almighty I will not conceal.^(F)
12 You have all seen this yourselves.
    Why then this meaningless talk?

¹³ “Here is the fate God allots to the wicked,
    the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty:^(G)
14 However many his children,^(H) their fate is the sword;^(I)
    his offspring will never have enough to eat.^(J)
15 The plague will bury those who survive him,
    and their widows will not weep for them.^(K)
16 Though he heaps up silver like dust^(L)
    and clothes like piles of clay,^(M)
17 what he lays up^(N) the righteous will wear,^(O)
    and the innocent will divide his silver.^(P)
18 The house^(Q) he builds is like a moth’s cocoon,^(R)
    like a hut^(S) made by a watchman.
¹⁹ He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more;^(T)
    when he opens his eyes, all is gone.^(U)
20 Terrors^(V) overtake him like a flood;^(W)
    a tempest snatches him away in the night.^(X)
21 The east wind^(Y) carries him off, and he is gone;^(Z)
    it sweeps him out of his place.^(AA)
22 It hurls itself against him without mercy^(AB)
    as he flees headlong^(AC) from its power.^(AD)
23 It claps its hands^(AE) in derision
    and hisses him out of his place.”^(AF)

¹³ Indeed, God does not listen to their empty plea;
    the Almighty pays no attention to it.^(A)

¹⁵ The eyes of the Lord^(A) are on the righteous,^(B)
    and his ears are attentive^(C) to their cry;
¹⁶ but the face of the Lord is against^(D) those who do evil,^(E)
    to blot out their name^(F) from the earth.

¹⁷ The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears^(G) them;
    he delivers them from all their troubles.
¹⁸ The Lord is close^(H) to the brokenhearted^(I)
    and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

¹⁹ The righteous person may have many troubles,^(J)
    but the Lord delivers him from them all;^(K)
20 he protects all his bones,
    not one of them will be broken.^(L)

²¹ Evil will slay the wicked;^(M)
    the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
²² The Lord will rescue^(N) his servants;
    no one who takes refuge^(O) in him will be condemned.

¹⁸ If I had cherished sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened;^(A)

¹⁹ He fulfills the desires^(A) of those who fear him;^(B)
    he hears their cry^(C) and saves them.^(D)

²⁹ The Lord is far from the wicked,
    but he hears the prayer of the righteous.^(A)

⁹ If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction,
    even their prayers are detestable.^(A)

¹⁵ When you spread out your hands^(A) in prayer,
    I hide^(B) my eyes from you;
even when you offer many prayers,
    I am not listening.^(C)

Your hands^(D) are full of blood!^(E)
