21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you (A)Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you (B)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Therefore, they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am (C)a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the [a]Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

New International Version
21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(A)
He said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”(B)
He answered, “No.”
22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(C) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[a](D)
