22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?
23 He said, I (A)am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the Prophet Isaiah.
24 [a]Now they which were sent, were of the Pharisees.

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(A) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[a](B)
