23 He said, I (A)am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the Prophet Isaiah.
24 [a]Now they which were sent, were of the Pharisees.
25 And they asked him, and said unto him, [b]Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, neither Elijah, nor that Prophet?

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(A) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[a](B)
24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
