John 11:37-39

³⁷But some of them said, “He healed the eyes of the man born blind. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”

³⁸Jesus was deeply disturbed again when he came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone covered the entrance. ³⁹Jesus said, “Remove the stone.”

Martha, the sister of the dead man, said, “Lord, the smell will be awful! He’s been dead four days.”

³⁷But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man^(A) have kept this man from dying?”^(B)

³⁸Jesus, once more deeply moved,^(C) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.^(D) ³⁹“Take away the stone,” he said.

“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”^(E)
