²⁵ The one who loves his life will lose it,^(A) and the one who hates^(B) his life^(C) in this world will keep it for eternal life.

⁸ But God proves^(A) his own love for us^(B) in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

¹⁶ This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life^(A) for us.^(B) We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.^(C)

⁹ God’s love was revealed among us^[a] in this way: God sent^(A) his one and only Son^(B) into the world so that we might live^(C) through him. ¹⁰ Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us^(D) and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice^[b](E) for our sins.
