John 13:19-21 New English Translation (NET Bible)

19 I am telling you this now,[a] before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe[b] that I am he.[c] 20 I tell you the solemn truth,[d] whoever accepts[e] the one I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”[f]

21 When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressed[g] in spirit, and testified,[h] “I tell you the solemn truth,[i] one of you will betray me.”[j]

Footnotes:

  1. John 13:19 tn Or (perhaps) “I am certainly telling you this.” According to BDF §12.3 ἀπ᾿ ἄρτι (aparti) should be read as ἀπαρτί (aparti), meaning “exactly, certainly.”
  2. John 13:19 tn Grk “so that you may believe.”
  3. John 13:19 tn Grk “that I am.” R. E. Brown (John [AB], 2:555) argues for a nonpredicated ἐγώ εἰμι (egō eimi) here, but this is far from certain.
  4. John 13:20 tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”
  5. John 13:20 tn Or “receives,” and so throughout this verse.
  6. John 13:20 sn The one who sent me refers to God.
  7. John 13:21 tn Or “greatly troubled.”
  8. John 13:21 tn Grk “and testified and said.”
  9. John 13:21 tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”
  10. John 13:21 tn Or “will hand me over.”
