12 (A)“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (B)Greater love has no one than this, (C)that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are (D)my friends (E)if you do what I command you. 15 (F)No longer do I call you servants,[a] for the servant (G)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (H)all that I have heard from my Father (I)I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but (J)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and (K)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that (L)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, (M)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 (N)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (O)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (P)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (Q)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (R)they will also persecute you. (S)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But (T)all these things they will do to you (U)on account of my name, (V)because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, (W)they would not have been guilty of sin,[b] but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (X)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 (Y)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, (Z)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have (AA)seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But (AB)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: (AC)‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But (AD)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, (AE)he will bear witness about me. 27 And (AF)you also will bear witness, (AG)because you have been with me (AH)from the beginning.

12 (A)This is My (B)commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (C)Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 (D)You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, (E)for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (F)You did not choose Me, but I chose you and (G)appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father (H)in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.

The World’s Hatred

18 (I)“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 (J)If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet (K)because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, (L)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. (M)If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But (N)all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 (O)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, (P)but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (Q)He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them (R)the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have (S)seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, (T)‘They hated Me without a cause.’

The Coming Rejection

26 (U)“But when the [a]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, (V)He will testify of Me. 27 And (W)you also will bear witness, because (X)you have been with Me from the beginning.

  1. John 15:26 Comforter, Gr. Parakletos

12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(A) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(B) 14 You are my friends(C) if you do what I command.(D) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(E) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(F) so that you might go and bear fruit(G)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(H) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(I)

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(J) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(K) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(L) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[a](M) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(N) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(O) for they do not know the one who sent me.(P) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(Q) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(R) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(S) they would not be guilty of sin.(T) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(U) ‘They hated me without reason.’[b](V)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate(W) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(X)—the Spirit of truth(Y) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(Z) 27 And you also must testify,(AA) for you have been with me from the beginning.(AB)
