  1. John 17:17 Or them to live in accordance with

But what does it say? “(A)The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, [a]that (B)if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and (C)believe in your heart that (D)God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, [b]resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, [c]resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “(E)Whoever believes in Him will not be [d]disappointed.” 12 For (F)there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is (G)Lord of (H)all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for “(I)Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him (J)whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without (K)a preacher? 15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “(L)How beautiful are the feet of those who [e](M)bring good news of good things!”

16 However, they (N)did not all heed the [f]good news; for Isaiah says, “(O)Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So faith comes from (P)hearing, and hearing by (Q)the word [g]of Christ.

18 But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have;

(R)Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
And their words to the ends of the [h]world.”

19 But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says,

(S)I will (T)make you jealous by that which is not a nation,
By a nation without understanding will I anger you.”

20 And Isaiah is very bold and says,

(U)I was found by those who did not seek Me,
I became manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”

21 But as for Israel He says, “(V)All the day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[a](A) that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare(B) with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”(C) and believe(D) in your heart that God raised him from the dead,(E) you will be saved.(F) 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[b](G) 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile(H)—the same Lord is Lord of all(I) and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord(J) will be saved.”[c](K)

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”[d](L)

16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news.(M) For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”[e](N) 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message,(O) and the message is heard through the word about Christ.(P) 18 But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did:

“Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.”[f](Q)

19 Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says,

“I will make you envious(R) by those who are not a nation;
    I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.”[g](S)

20 And Isaiah boldly says,

“I was found by those who did not seek me;
    I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.”[h](T)

21 But concerning Israel he says,

“All day long I have held out my hands
    to a disobedient and obstinate people.”[i](U)
