For [a]whoever has been (A)born of God (B)overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

Who is the one who overcomes the world, but the one who (C)believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the One who came (D)by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not [b]with the water only, but [c]with the water and [d]with the blood. It is (E)the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are (F)three that testify: [e]the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are [f]in agreement. (G)If we receive the testimony of people, the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that (H)He has testified concerning His Son. 10 The one who believes in the Son of God (I)has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has (J)made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. 11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us (K)eternal life, and (L)this life is in His Son. 12 (M)The one who has the Son has the life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.

This Is Written That You May Know

13 (N)These things I have written to you who (O)believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have (P)eternal life. 14 This is (Q)the confidence which we have [g]before Him, that, (R)if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, (S)we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

16 If anyone sees his brother or sister [h]committing a sin not leading to death, (T)he shall ask and [i]God will, for him, give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. (U)There is sin leading to death; (V)I am not saying that he should ask about that. 17 (W)All unrighteousness is sin, and (X)there is sin not leading to death.

18 (Y)We know that (Z)no one who has been born of God [j]sins; but He who was born of God (AA)keeps him, and (AB)the evil one does not (AC)touch him. 19 (AD)We know that (AE)we are of God, and that (AF)the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And (AG)we know that (AH)the Son of God has come, and has (AI)given us understanding so that we may know (AJ)Him who is true; and we (AK)are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. (AL)This is the true God and (AM)eternal life.

21 (AN)Little children, guard yourselves from (AO)idols.

for everyone born of God(A) overcomes(B) the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.(C)

This is the one who came by water and blood(D)—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.(E) For there are three(F) that testify: the[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. We accept human testimony,(G) but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God,(H) which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony.(I) Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar,(J) because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,(K) and this life is in his Son.(L) 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.(M)

Concluding Affirmations

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God(N) so that you may know that you have eternal life.(O) 14 This is the confidence(P) we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.(Q) 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know(R) that we have what we asked of him.(S)

16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.(T) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.(U) I am not saying that you should pray about that.(V) 17 All wrongdoing is sin,(W) and there is sin that does not lead to death.(X)

18 We know that anyone born of God(Y) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one(Z) cannot harm them.(AA) 19 We know that we are children of God,(AB) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.(AC) 20 We know also that the Son of God has come(AD) and has given us understanding,(AE) so that we may know him who is true.(AF) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.(AG)

21 Dear children,(AH) keep yourselves from idols.(AI)
