19 (A)The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I (B)have spoken openly to the world; I always (C)taught in [a]synagogues and (D)in the temple area, where all the Jews congregate; and I said nothing in secret. 21 Why are you asking Me? Ask those who have heard what I spoke to them. Look: these people know what I said.” 22 But when He said this, one of the (E)officers, who was standing nearby, (F)struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” 23 (G)Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” 24 (H)So Annas sent Him bound to (I)Caiaphas the high priest.

The High Priest Questions Jesus(A)

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(B) or at the temple,(C) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(D) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(E) nearby slapped him in the face.(F) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(G) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(H) the high priest.

59 Now the chief priests and the entire [a](A)Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on (B)two came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘(C)I am able to destroy the [b]temple of God and to rebuild it [c]in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You offer no answer for what these men are testifying against You?” 63 But (D)Jesus kept silent. (E)And the high priest said to Him, “I (F)place You under oath by (G)the living God, to tell us whether You are the [d]Christ, (H)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus *said to him, (I)You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see (J)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and (K)coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 Then the high priest (L)tore his [e]robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? See, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “(M)He deserves death!”

67 (N)Then they (O)spit in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others [f]slapped Him, 68 and said, “(P)Prophesy to us, You [g]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(A) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(B) came forward.

Finally two(C) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(D)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(E)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(F) by the living God:(G) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(H) the Son of God.”(I)

64 “You have said so,”(J) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(K) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[a](L)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(M) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(N) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(O) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(P)

55 Now the chief priests and the entire [a](A)Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56 For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent. 57 And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘(B)I will destroy this [b]temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.’” 59 And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. 60 And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?” 61 (C)But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. (D)Again the high priest was questioning Him, and *said to Him, “Are You the [c]Christ, the Son of [d]the Blessed One?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see (E)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and (F)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 (G)Tearing his clothes, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the (H)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death. 65 And some began to (I)spit on Him, and [e](J)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him, “(K)Prophesy!” Then the officers took custody of Him [f]and slapped Him in the face.

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(A) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(B) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(C)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(D)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(E)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(F) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(G) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(H)

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

66 (D)When it was day, (E)the [b]Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their (F)council chamber, saying, 67 (G)If You are the [c]Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; 68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69 (H)But from now on (I)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 And they all said, “So You are (J)the Son of God?” And He said to them, (K)You say correctly that I am.” 71 And then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony?
