Jesus Dies

28 After this, Jesus knew that everything had been done. So that the Scripture would come true, he said, “I am thirsty.”[a] 29 There was a jar full of vinegar there, so the soldiers soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a branch of a hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ mouth. 30 When Jesus tasted the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and died.

The Death of Jesus(A)

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(B) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(C) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(D) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(E) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
