Nicodemus said to him, (A)“How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel (B)and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, (C)we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but (D)you[a] do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 (E)No one has (F)ascended into heaven except (G)he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.[b] 14 And (H)as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man (I)be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes (J)in him (K)may have eternal life.[c]

For God So Loved the World

16 “For (L)God so loved (M)the world,[d] (N)that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not (O)perish but have eternal life. 17 For (P)God did not send his Son into the world (Q)to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 (R)Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not (S)believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 (T)And this is the judgment: (U)the light has come into the world, and (V)people loved the darkness rather than the light because (W)their works were evil. 20 (X)For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, (Y)lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever (Z)does what is true (AA)comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

“How can this be?”(A) Nicodemus asked.

10 “You are Israel’s teacher,”(B) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,(C) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.(D) 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven(E) except the one who came from heaven(F)—the Son of Man.[a](G) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(H) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[b](I) 15 that everyone who believes(J) may have eternal life in him.”[c](K)

16 For God so loved(L) the world that he gave(M) his one and only Son,(N) that whoever believes(O) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(P) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world(Q) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.(R) 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,(S) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.(T) 19 This is the verdict: Light(U) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.(V) 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.(W) 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
