30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(B) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(C)
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(D) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(E) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(F) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(G) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(H) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(I) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[a]”(J)
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,”(K) said Jesus, “then you would[b] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(L) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(M) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(N)
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(O)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(P) for I have come here from God.(Q) I have not come on my own;(R) God sent me.(S) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(T) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(U) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(V) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(W) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?
