¹¹ He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.^{(A) 12} Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed^(B) in his name,^(C) he gave the right to become children of God^(D)— ¹³ children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.^(E)

¹⁴ The Word became flesh^(F) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,^(G) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace^(H) and truth.^(I)

John Testifies About Jesus

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,^(A) who takes away the sin of the world!^(B)

³ Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.^[a]”^(A)

⁴ “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

⁵ Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.^{(B) 6} Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit^[b] gives birth to spirit.^{(C) 7} You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You^[c] must be born again.’ ⁸ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”^[d](D)

⁹ “How can this be?”^(E) Nicodemus asked.

¹⁰ “You are Israel’s teacher,”^(F) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? ¹¹ Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,^(G) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.^{(H) 12} I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? ¹³ No one has ever gone into heaven^(I) except the one who came from heaven^(J)—the Son of Man.^{[e](K) 14} Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,^(L) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,^{[f](M) 15} that everyone who believes^(N) may have eternal life in him.”^[g](O)

¹⁶ For God so loved^(P) the world that he gave^(Q) his one and only Son,^(R) that whoever believes^(S) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.^{(T) 17} For God did not send his Son into the world^(U) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.^{(V) 18} Whoever believes in him is not condemned,^(W) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.^{(X) 19} This is the verdict: Light^(Y) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.^{(Z) 20} Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.^{(AA) 21} But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

³⁶ Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,^(A) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

²⁴ “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me^(A) has eternal life^(B) and will not be judged^(C) but has crossed over from death to life.^(D)

⁹ I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.^[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture.

²⁸ I give them eternal life,^(A) and they shall never perish;^(B) no one will snatch them out of my hand.^{(C) 29} My Father, who has given them to me,^(D) is greater than all^[a];^(E) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am^(A) the true vine,^(B) and my Father is the gardener. ² He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,^(C) while every branch that does bear fruit^(D) he prunes^[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. ³ You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.^{(E) 4} Remain in me, as I also remain in you.^(F) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

⁵ “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;^(G) apart from me you can do nothing. ⁶ If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.^{(H) 7} If you remain in me^(I) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.^{(J) 8} This is to my Father’s glory,^(K) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.^(L)

⁹ “As the Father has loved me,^(M) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. ¹⁰ If you keep my commands,^(N) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. ¹¹ I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.^{(O) 12} My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.^{(P) 13} Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.^{(Q) 14} You are my friends^(R) if you do what I command.^{(S) 15} I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.^{(T) 16} You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you^(U) so that you might go and bear fruit^(V)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.^(W)
